i had a domain that expired on the 10th and i forgot to renew.
so i wrote to my registrar and they said this: Your domain has expired and is currently in a 30 day Redemption period with the Domain Registry. During this time your domain will need to be restored to an Active status before we can renew it for you. While in Redemption, only the previous owner of the domain can restore it and they can only do so with the original Registrar they used. There is a redemption fee of $119.95 for you to restore a domain name at this time. Please fill out the Redemption form found under the Redemption section in our FAQs and fax it back to us if you wish to restore your domain name. Thank you, ------------------- is this fair? this domain is not a great domain.. below average in fact but it belongs to a friend... and im quite embarrased cos i forgot to renew the domain for him. what should i do? what does your registrar do in this case? this is the first time its happened to me. |

This is the absolutely usual situation, just pay this $119 fee or forget about this domain

i found this on my other registrar, directnic:
Can I renew my domain even though it is expired already? You will have a 40 day grace period after the domain expires. During the grace period, you can still renew the domain, but you cannot transfer it. If you do not renew the domain within the 40 day grace period, the domain will be sent to the central registry to delete. It will take a while, though, to delete expired domains from your account after the central registry has deleted your record. It will take up to 48 hours to propagate your domain information to the Internet WHOIS if you renew your domain AFTER it expires. You are well advised to renew your domain at least one week BEFORE it expires. On 28-Dec-2002, a new Redemption Period for domain names was instituted by ICANN, the governing body of the Internet. This means that when domains expire and go through the holding period through the registrar, the domain is held by the central registry for an additional 35 days before being released. |

This is real life, not monopoly so fairness has nothing to with it... You fucked up and now you either have to live with it or pay to fix the fuckup...
