i found this on my other registrar, directnic:
Can I renew my domain even though it is expired already?

You will have a 40 day grace period after the domain expires. During the grace period, you can still renew the domain, but you cannot transfer it. If you do not renew the domain within the 40 day grace period, the domain will be sent to the central registry to delete. It will take a while, though, to delete expired domains from your account after the central registry has deleted your record.

It will take up to 48 hours to propagate your domain information to the Internet WHOIS if you renew your domain AFTER it expires. You are well advised to renew your domain at least one week BEFORE it expires.

On 28-Dec-2002, a new Redemption Period for domain names was instituted by ICANN, the governing body of the Internet. This means that when domains expire and go through the holding period through the registrar, the domain is held by the central registry for an additional 35 days before being released.
