Both my husband and I work from home, in two seperate offices. Its cool, can work in my pj's...but sometimes ya get the itch to be out of the house. But I guess its better than working for the man.

I work at home and it's much better for me than working in an office. The best part is that I can work at any time of the day or night I want.

When I got my first laptop and portable scanner I literally could put my entire office in a knapsack with an artpad, walkman and I was free as a bird.
I would go to the park or wander around Manhattan and draw and scan and upload later. What's odd is with the increase in technology I can't find a scanner like the one I had. So tools are simple still. Laptop, artpad and open air. Add to that a video camera and you just make content as you go along. With today's cell phone technology you can do wonders. |

one of the big disadvantages of it is you end up working a lot more hours than you would at an office, and after a while you get cabin fever if you don't force yourself to get out. Some days I swear if I don't get up and get out of the house immediately, I'm gonna freakin' lose it.
but that comes and goes.... long as you get out once in a while, it's not so bad. Even if it's just running to the store or something. Or just go for a drive for no reason and get some air.

Good point Amputate.
That brings me to country/city living and working at home. I was more at peace living in the country and working at home. Just me and the critters and varmints. In the city, there's too much temptation to split the house and bs around. Did you guys have to make modifications to your homes to accomodate your computer systems and lines? I remember a few years ago Andy from SexSwap told a hilarious story about him trying to get a T1 line in. |

LOVE IT! I have no motivation problems at home, my problem is also that I spend more hours working than if I were in the office. My boyfriend works at home too (in the next room) which is cool. Sometimes I realize that we haven't left the house in days and we have to make a point of getting out some.
But some nice things include wearing pj's all day, listening to whatever music I feel like as loud as I want, eating 24-7, having my dogs curled up at my feet while I work, and smoking right at my compy. Can't complain at all! It's been MUCH better since we moved somewhere we can get DSL - had Direcway Satellite before that and I'm not even gonna get started on how fucked that was...If you are in the boonies with no options but satellite or T1, get the T1 if you can afford it! Although when I lived in the boonies I could sunbathe topless at lunchtime...Kinda miss that! |

I think the two main drawbacks of working at home are lost productivity and the lack of interaction with other humans, we are social creatures and need that little bit of talk and chatter. Even if it is with complete moron co-workers.

seems like theres an obvious disadvantage here... motivation. i have to agree. with 500 cable channels, fully stocked fridge & easily accessible liquor, a comfy couch, pets to play with, computer games and nobody looking over my shoulder to say "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! GET BACK TO WORK!" it's very easy to get distracted if i really wanted to. i sometimes like to go over to a clients place with my laptop and work with them just so i'm in more controlled enviroment. kinda breaks up the monotiny every now and then.

I used to work at home, and wished i had an office
Then i got an office and wish I worked at home. Then i moved to a new place and started working at home again. Now i sometimes wish i had an office. ![]() The grass is always greener on the other side. It's hard to stay motivated at home sometimes, and there are lots of distractions. You have to be disciplined. When I had the office i was more focused on work when i was there and it was nice to be out of the house and on a set schedule. I think i finally got my foucus in check and woking at home is feeling pretty good. But you have to make sure you keep your work seperate from the rest of the house. |

NOW you're talkin'! ![]() What other ways do you guys relieve work pressure? I have two, I have a DVD running or I whip out the playstation or just fire up a pc game. I took an old Starfleet Command III game and hex edited all the names of the starships after websites. Then I would name my ship after my website and would blow the heck out of other ships. I would even name the enemy characters after people who pissed me off. It is such a gas to do that shit! Then when you go back to work you just giggle the day away. |

but, I think it is imperative for anyone that works from home seriously, (not just goofing around) that you keep work and home separate. A dedicated office is crucial. And inside that office, I think it's important to keep it focused on work.... which is why I DIDN'T get the fancy polished cherrywood desk and the barcelounger for a chair..... I have no television in here, no games, no pets, no minibar, no eating in the office allowed, and no fucking nonsense. And that's the way I run my ship. Some people simply get too relaxed in their surroundings and then the motivation problems kick in. I chose a sterile, studio environment from day one, and it stays that way. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Used to work at home.. too many distrations, newborn child being on the top of that list.
I'll work from home again when circumstances permit, the freedom is great.. don't have to get up so damn early and struggle with the morning traffic. |

Definite disadvantage: the isolation it brings. Felt weird going back to school and being around 'people' again on a normal basis, but I'm glad I did.
Advantage: No 'office politics' BS, sleep in if need be, and work in just my t-shirt & socks or sweats if I want, unless I'm shooting or on cam.

Y'know, I like RVs and conversion vans. I had planned on just getting an RV, tricking it to the max and just rolling around the country havin' adventures and shit and just uploading when I was done with some toons. With today's satellite technology and RV customizing tricks it's lookin' too good to pass up.
I used to ride around in my conversion van and then later roll around in RVs. Drive, eat, sleep, chicks. Now that I'm in Calif. The coastline is lookin' realllll inviting. Any of you guys love road life? |

Lack of interaction...true, Lack of productivity why? Many people say that when you work for yourself, you put in more hours and work harder since you get all the rewards (and losses of course)

It's great to be working at home especially if have kids. You can really be a hands-on parent. But sometimes, it gets boring too. You will miss the city buzz and the other glamorous things in the corporate world.
