Listen To Stern Today?

First couple of hours today were interesting - Howard says he wants out, he came to the realization that it's a fight he can't win, he can't do the show anymore like he wants to and he doesn't want to turn into Lenny Bruce and bore his listeners with political bullshit. He also says he's scared, he doesn't want to wage a war against Bush and the religious wackos and wind up hunted down by them or the government to fuck his life up. Which they will if he continues to bash Bush and instruct his listeners to vote for Kerry - he says he doesn't like Kerry any better, the FCC under Clinton was no picnic either.

So he says he's ready to go to satellite radio and he's now thinking about turning howardstern.com into something.

He's got a source in the FCC who's keeping him informed on what's going down. They're now fighting amongst each other over whether to shut him down now or wait until after the election. If they shut him down now they risk turning him into a martyr and whipping alot of his fans into a frenzy and voting against Bush. I agree with them.

If this election is close like the last one, a couple million Stern fans could really tip the election to Kerry. If this was 10 years ago he could do it no problem, Howard's not as popular as he was back then - but i still think he could get a million non-voter fans to do what he says this time.

Lost all credibility in my eyes when he backed Bush for 2 years..............now backs Kerry cause of his FCC problems.
Niether Bush nor Kerry have anything to do with Sterns problems.

Big fan, first time caller.

If Kerry wins NOTHING will change in the current "culture war" that is going on in the US. Watch what is happening on the floors of the house and the senate on C-span sometime.....this stuff is coming from BOTH parties.

All you Kerry supporters are going to be VERY dissappointed if he wins, because next year, you will see that NOTHING HAS CHANGED, and that the crackdown on obscenity will be going just a strong as ever.

sorry, I know that Bush is everybodies favorite whipping boy, but it's the truth.

Stern agrees that Kerry and the Democrats won't be much better on this issue. That's why he says he's throwing in the towel and is ready to go to satellite radio, if CBS allows him to go, he still has 2 years left on his contract.

The show is boring these days, the show gets censored plus now he's doing self-censorship - pointless to have a Howard Stern who's not really Howard Stern.

Stern on XM. Very interesting possibility.

Is satellite regulated at all? If not, then it's a no brainer.

Very limited regulation over technology but not content. Since XM Radio is a gatekeeper provider that charges a fee, the FCC has no jurisdiction.

I don't think hes ever going to go to satellite radio. Its just part of the martyr act. Hes sick of doing a radio show.

There's more cursing on satellite radio than on radio so there must be some looser retrictions, certainly isnt as regulated as radio. I think its the whole you have to be a subscriber instead of taping into free air waves that allows them to not have to conform so much to FCC guidelines. But I havent really looked into it.

I just went over to XMradio.com to see what it's about.

You're talking about $10 a month for service and you need the hardware. I know a lot of cars are being made 'XM Ready.' Once it goes wider, I am sure costs will drop even more. And if Stern goes XM, sales would no doubt jump immensely.

If Stern went to Sat radio, that would pro. tip the scale for me buying one. Especially one I seen on a commercial that is portable between the car and office etc.

Radio is really bad in neck of the woods, you can only listen to Journey and Brian Adams so many times a day.

Every few months he says "I want out", "I'm gonna get fired", "I can't take it anymore" (you hear this one especially around contract negotiations) nothing changes.

I know he's been saying this more and more because of the FCC cracking down, but it's the same dribble.

took a long time for cable TV to become standard in everybody's lives. people said nobody would ever pay for television. i remember when i was a kid in the small city i grew up in, 30 years ago, there was a family who I guess got the cable tv license, i think they had like one van - nobody bought cable tv from them. I bet they're millionaires 100 times over now.

satellite radio will become big faster but it's still going to be years. getting the automakers to put them in as standard equipment will make satellite radio fly. they should just give away the hardware free.

I would be willing to bet 12 clicks is right.

Don't get me wrong, I wish Stern was telling the truth about this. It would make for great debate, but it's just drama.
