I would question anyone who can guarantee you top positioning. SEO's can influence rankings, they can't control them and as such guaranteeing a position is something which most good SEO's will not do.

WiredGuy, if you aren't willing to back up your promises with a contractual guarantee, then you're in the wrong business.

No one can 100% guarantee you that they can get you the results you need. No one has an absolute influence or power over the search engines.

But responsible SEO's should sign a contract with the client detailing under which conditions the SEO should be paid. This contract should include a placement range and a timeframe detailing how quickly the ranking must be obtained, and how long the ranking must be held before the SEO is paid.

This guarantees that the client isn't paying for failed services or services that are not above board. It guarantees that if the ranking is not obtained, the SEO is not paid.

When my company started to offer Guaranteed SEO, that is what we meant. Our promises are guaranteed. If we don't deliver, you don't pay. There are no upfront charges.

Some people, including you, WiredGuy, twisted my words and tried to make me look incompetent. However, anyone who could read clearly saw that we could not guarantee that we could achieve any ranking the client desired... we were guaranteeing that the client wouldn't pay if we couldn't.

I'd be careful selecting an SEO that doesn't offer a contractual guarantee as I have outlined.

Also, I'm sorry but we no longer accept clients. I just wanted to make this clear for StickyGreen's benefit.

You just said no one can guarantee 100% the results and a couple sentences later saying that your company guarantees SEO. Seems rather unusual if you ask me.

Next, I do NOT provide contractual guarantee's to any of my customers, that is stated right in the beginning. When I used to do SEO on a consulting basis, I provided the optimization as a service and that service will be paid for. Drawing on a parallel, if you hire an attorney and you lose a court case, you cannot expect a refund from the lawyer (excluding contingency based cases). This is a professional service that is provided, no different than retaining a lawyer. I will not guarantee results unless I can control all factors involved in the process. Seeing this is not feasible with SEO (other than PPC based), I will not guarantee positioning results.

You can choose to offer contractual guarantees with your business and I wish you the best of luck, but I will do no such thing.

A reminder why I get a retainer up front for my consulting work. IT, NOT SEO BTW.

You either have a trusting working realtionship with a client or you don't.

....

WiredGuy, I think you were confused on my original statement some months ago. The two guarantees, in context, are completely different issues. (Guaranteeing that it will be done Versus a no-payment guarantee if it isn?t.)

Regardless, if you don?t want to make contractual guarantees, that?s your business, but in the interest of the client a contractual guarantee would be best. There are many unethical people in this business, and I believe that clients deserve the piece of mind of knowing that they won?t be screwed. I?m not trying to insinuate that you are unethical; you are obviously a standup guy.

Anyways, like I said, we?ve decided to stop taking on development/design/SEO clients, but thanks for the well wishes. Good luck to you too.

Peace.
