What do you think. It's a belief that negative press is just as valuable as good press. A lot of you here use negative press to boost sales, but you think it's really as valuable as good press? When comparing the 2, is it better to be known as the "bad boy" or the company who treats the affiliates like they're always right?

I know of 1 person who's built his rep on bad press, and it's paid off...However, would he have made more if he had taken the nice guy approach?

What are your thoughts?

Just personal opinion... I think mutal respect is a powerful tool. And I don't get that by calling people names or flaming them on a message board.

Broad statements like that are never 100% accurate. Sure sometimes what most people call bad press will be good, like Janet Jackson's boob on the super bowl. But really, really bad press, isn't good press. Michael Jackson fucking kids is news, and in no way is it good for him.

I know that I feel ALL press is great press. At this point, I'm not sure it matters what kind of press you get (other than being called a cheater). When it's all said and done, people will give a "bad guy" a shot just to prove that his product sucks. Generally it seems that the product actually works out to be a top seller and praise comes out a short time later.

I want to hear how it's worked out for people taking both routes, and why they feel the route they took was beneficial.

In regards to this negative press. Do you think the bannings of top posters on GFY will help anybody who was banned? I believe it'll help bring these people more attention, and attract the newer individuals to the board to their programs. Last night was an example of the negative press theory. How do you feel those "stigmatized" will do after their names are ever present in the mouths of GFY board members?

Not all press is equal, but bad press still gets your name out there, gets people talking about you, and still gets people to visit your site, program, or whatever the fuck you sell. So it does help get you mentioned.

Its more related to the fact that if you cant get good press, dont think that bad press is necessarily going to kill you either. Although it also depends on the level of bad press.

I guess news that you are going bankrupt probably wont turn your company around with new affiliates signing up

Memory "details" tend to fade, so unless the bad press is something huge line ENRON (cheaters), you tend to remember the company and not so much whether their deeds were good or bad.

It all depends on what this bad press is about and how it has come about. Look at CCBill and iBill. When iBill has old customers talk bad about them, there goes a couple more customers from iBill to CCBill. When CCBill has bad press, affiliates jump ship.

As far as people just ranting and raving on the boards to gain attention. For some it works for others it doesn't. Depends on how they do it. I don't take anybody serious on GFY, but I'm not going to do business with someone that is acting like a idiot. Too much competition on most products to where I can find someone that treats me like a customer should be treated.

Personally I think people acting up on the boards to gain a bad image don't know how to truely market their product. These people are losing customers that they could of gained from good marketing. If they new how to truely market their product they could get more customers with a good image instead of the bad one.

Howard Stern is good at marketing cause he is providing entertainment to regular people. When a business is trying to attract other businesses, that entertainment doesn't go so well. A company isn't looking at another company for it's entertainment value, but what it can provide and how honest they are.

If you are unheard of and you get press then that's fantasic, but as an established company with a great reputation it depends.

If it's something that is not too serious or would not effect the customer directly and creates great talkability like a big row etc then that's good.

If it's somebody caught shaving etc then that's obviouly going to effect their reputation.

I think it depends what kind of negative press.
I dont think bad service, not paying out, and being a corrupt company will make you more successful. On the other hand people stirring a fuss in the press about issues such as the values that your company portrays, like do-gooders saying "its a bad message for our kids" for a film or video game for example, would probably be benificial to the success of the company.
