Dude I carry a pocket knife every where I go, Wal-mart has them for only $28.00 bucks and you can attach them to your belt.

I'm a black belt Shotokan style and I've taught black belts.

I like the brass nuckles. I've never thought of that before. Easier to hide and carry than nunchucks. But, any weapon can be taken away from you and used against you, so bad to rely on it. Also, most weapons need to be prepared in some way before they are ready to use, and often the critical situation is upon you instantly. Not good.

When a student of mine wants to learn for self defense reasons, I tell them this:

Even a slightly built human can hit as hard as a heavy weight's punch when they kick. That's because the muscles of the butt and thigh are huge. If you learn to harness those huge muscles you can hit very hard. My advice is to develop only one technique, and that technique is the front kick.

Learning karate is not trivial. It takes tens of thousands of repetitions just to learn one technique. But if you already work out it's easy to add what you need to your routine, and in a couple of years you'll have a kick you can use.

I can't teach you what you need to know here. Get yourself a local teacher. You don't need to take his class, just get a private lesson once a month, and have him teach the front kick every time. Then practice it every day, at least 100 repetitions. Go easy, your goal is training your muscles, not ripping your tendons.

After a few months you'll have a decent kick. Get a heavy bag and do your daily 100 on the bag. Hit it right in the sweet spot so it swings away perfectly. When it comes back down, hit it again when it's at the bottom of its arc. THAT is what will train you to kick the shit out of someone with decent timing.

:1orglaugh I hope to god you're joking. You gonna get some poor bastard killed with advice like that.

wimpy 02-24-2004 07:11 PM

no, not joking at all.

Look, the guy's asking for a self defense weapon. That's my opinion. A good kick can't be taken away, can't be used against you, can't be seen, and is usually unexpected. It's an ideal weapon.

Just don't make the mistake of thinking you have a great kick when you don't. It takes years to get it that good.

I know that in the UK, people aren't allowed to carry shit. Guns, knives, pepper spray, mace, tasers, stun guns, knucke dusters... all illegal to carry in public and only knives are legal to keep at home. I almost got into a fight in town yesterday with a skinhead who was whispering threats behind my back. I turned around right away, he backed off and started to act all innocent. Had I touched him, I probably would've been arrested. Also recently, a wheelchair bound 75 year old man was arrested for spraying a burglar (who was in his home at the time) with pepper spray. Self defense is a crime, the laws are just fucking ridiculous.

What do you guys carry in public, and keep at home for self defense?

i use my fists, weapons just get you in more trouble that its worth

Yes I have. It was an average sized guy but wirey. His face was scared from knife fights. A tough motherfucker. Everyone was scared of him, he had beaten several of us up. When he started picking on me I kicked the fucking shit out of him not once, several times. Fucker.

Usually though, all you gotta do is have attitude. The people who pick fights are bullies, and bullies, at their core, are afraid. If you are not afraid they won't swing.

So once. That's what I figured. You should get a little more experience and training before talking self-defense. No offense.

Ah, grasshopper, you should not be so quick to assume that you know all that is.

but that's ok, it is human nature to assume that others are as weak and powerless as one's self.

No offense.
