Sorry to hear that. IDE drives are known to take a shit at critical moments.

Good thing is SATA is out now.

If you're saying SATA drives are less likely to suffer mechanical failure, you're wrong.

They couldnt be any worse than IDE drives, which last about a year around here now. I am working on building a new file server. As soon as I get it built, I am going to move my office onto a file/server model instead of a workgroup model.

That is, no documents or files will be saved on local machines - all saving is on the server where it can be protected. Only OS and program run locally, all stuff saved to the network.

I just ordered four of these (link below) last night and four removeable drive bays. Also ordered a new MB that supports SATA RAID and a full height file server case. I'll stick a gigabit card in there and this olace will finally be run the way it always should have been.

I hope you choose a very redundant (sp?) raid configuration, as soon as you start raiding ata/sata the chances of your drive suffereing a critical failure is even higher than if they were arranged as single disks. And you must live in the Ghetto if your IDE shit only last a year, i still got a 500meg hard drive in my linux box which is god knows how old and it's still kickin on fine.

Heat is the number one cause of hard drive failure. Always put your drives in the path of the airflow, like in front of the intake fans, lian-li style, and they should last for years.
