designers: how do you cut-up a photoshop image for html tables?

Is there a trick or just a matter of 'show grid' and cut it up manually?

Try to use Image Ready.

There you are able to work easily with slices

I just slice it in PS using guides. Image ready is also a handy tool to have.

You can use your slice tool on the toolbar, or you can use the "create slice from layer" option. Some people use imageready, I do all mine right in PS. If you do a save for web once you'd made your slices, you can have it generate the html for you as well.

You mean printing it out and using an x-acto knife then rescaning each piece is not how everyone else does it?

So Image Ready sounds cool.. is there a stand-alone version available?

I run PS 5.5 and all Image Ready links refer to Photoshop CS
on Adobe's site.

Can't agree with that. The compression and the quality is way better when i save it optimized within image ready. Maybe it's me who is doing something wrong ... dunno. But in the past i had everytime better results using image ready.

I just flatten image and add a background layer and color it in

then carefully crop out the images

if I fuck up, I just do it again
