Good morning everyone.

My dobie of 11 years can not walk as of last night. I am taking him into the vet now. Please wish me luck.

good luck but keep your chin up most pure breed dogs have hip displacement problems at one point or another some anti inflamatories and a few days rest should be alright.

You don't have to put him down. You can rig up an easy support device.

Buy one PVC bar. Buy 2 L join PVC ends. Place the two ends into the ends of the main bar. You'll now have something that looks like a long stretched U.

Buy two rubber straps normally used as tie downs on car roofs.
Take out the S connectors. Make a loop with each strap and insert a circular keychain loop (heavy duty type).

Place each strap under his back legs and slide up. Now place the bar between the two looped straps.

You can now walk him easily and he'll have the harness for support. Sometimes by doing this you can rebuild the muscles and joints after about 3 months of being able to walk good again.

E-Mail if you have questions on rigging it up.

Thank you KRL, I appreciate the advice. He passed away about 1 hour ago. I just got back from the Vet's office, he had a seizure and they tried to revive him and he died

Oh my, I don't know you, but I am SO SORRY to hear of your loss. My heart breaks for you. There is nothing like the bond we share with our pets.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Words aren't gonna suffice... terribly, terribly sorry to hear it Jasmine. You've got the best wishes of all of us dog lovers out here, no doubt. Don't want to be redundant, but here's hoping you find the strength to cherish the good times, take solace in that your friend didn't endure much pain, and faith that you'll be with him again someday...

Thank you everyone! I am still in shock, I have already cried my eyes out and yet I know there is more crying , sadness and emptyness to deal with.

The hardest part for me is that I have to tell my son's when they get home from school today.

The House Dog's Grave
I've changed my ways a little; I cannot now
Run with you in the evenings along the shore,
Except in a kind of dream; and you, if you dream a moment,
You see me there.

So leave awhile the paw-marks on the front door
Where I used to scratch to go out or in,
And you'd soon open; leave on the kitchen floor
The marks of my drinking-pan.

I cannot lie by your fire as I used to do
On the warm stone,
Nor at the foot of your bed; no, all the night through
I lie alone.

But your kind thought has laid me less than six feet
Outside your window where firelight so often plays,
And where you sit to read--and I fear often grieving for me--
Every night your lamplight lies on my place.

You, man and woman, live so long, it is hard
To think of you ever dying
A little dog would get tired, living so long.
I hope than when you are lying

Under the ground like me your lives will appear
As good and joyful as mine.
No, dear, that's too much hope: you are not so well cared for
As I have been.

And never have known the passionate undivided
Fidelities that I knew.
Your minds are perhaps too active, too many-sided. . . .
But to me you were true.

You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend.
I loved you well, and was loved. Deep love endures
To the end and far past the end. If this is my end,
I am not lonely. I am not afraid. I am still yours.

I had a similar experience not long ago with my Dobie. Of all things he had Lou Gherigs disease where the brain is not able to send the impulses to the right nerves. It started with him dragging his hind feet and just got progressively worse. I had to put him down almost a wekk after diagnosis.

Age 11 is a great age for a Dobie. Mine was only 9. His name was Zeus, after one of the Dobies on Magnum PI. Not a day goes by where i dont think of him.

I know you will miss him and he will miss you. My heart goes out to you. He is happy and painfree now and you must remember that. Losing a pet is something horrible to experience and you must realize that the people such as i who have posted here feel for you and know you will remmeber all the happy times.

A Little Dog Angel

High up in the courts of heaven today
a little dog angel waits;
with the other angels he will not play,
but he sits alone at the gates.
"For I know my master will come" says he,
"and when he comes he will call for me."

The other angels pass him by
As they hurry toward the throne,
And he watches them with a wistful eye
as he sits at the gates alone.
"But I know if I just wait patiently
that someday my master will call for me."

And his master, down on earth below,
as he sits in his easy chair,
forgets sometimes, and whispers low
to the dog who is not there.
And the little dog angel cocks his ears
and dreams that his master's voice he hears.

And when at last his master waits
outside in the dark and cold,
for the hand of death to open the door,
that leads to those courts of gold,
he will hear a sound through the gathering dark,
a little dog angel's bark.

I AWAKE
By Mike Blanche

I awake...but I do not remember falling asleep.
Just a moment ago, little Jimmy threw the ball
And I chased it with all my puppy concentration,
Timing each bounce in the grass to catch it
At just the right moment.
Did I feel the front yard's grass turn to stone?
Did I hear a screaming sound?
Perhaps I did. Perhaps I dreamed.
The fresh tang of dewy grass teases my nose.
The warm sun warms me. I open my eyes,
Many new friends gather around me.
They show me what to eat, where to drink.
We play and sleep, near the bridge of all colors.
This is wonderful...but it is not perfect.

I awake. Only a moment ago I fell asleep,
Deep asleep, lying in Jim's arms.
I remember the pain in his eyes,
And the pain in my body, slowly ebbing.
So many years I played at his feet,
Slept by his side, sat watching at his windows.
Slowly I moved less, jumped less, ate less, saw less.
He loved me, carefully caressing me,
Making soft soothing sounds.
But the pain is gone; the blades of grass
Tickle my nose. I open my eyes,
And find new friends gathered around me.
My legs are like springs. Butterflies play tag.
I am fed, and we play near the many-colored bridge.
It is wonderful...but it is not perfect.

I awake. When I fell asleep moments ago,
I thought all was finished. But now I see
Sunshine streaming through the leaves above.
All the pains and aches of my long life
Are dimmest memories. I lift my hand
Before my eyes. I see it clearly, soft and smooth,
As it has not been in years. I rise,
My legs strong again, my toes against
The cool grass. My ears hear birdsong;
The freshness of dawn floods my senses.
I move easily, drawn to a bridge nearby,
Arching gracefully into the distance.
This is wonderful...but it is not perfect.

I approach the bridge, and turn to gaze
Into the fields nearby. I see happy creatures,
Sitting, playing, and sleeping.
But my eyes are drawn to two joyous beings,
Running at their fullest speed.
They seem familiar. Can they be
The animals I knew before?
THEY ARE! I kneel down,
They rush into my arms, wetting my face
With joyous kisses and tears.
We stand. We move together
Across the Rainbow Bridge.
This is wonderful...this is perfect.

The Power of the Dog
There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long--
So why in--Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Rudyard Kipling

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only certain immortality,
never fully understanding the necessary plan."

Best wishes.

We have two dogs and if either passed away we would be devastated.

Thank you very much. My dobie's name was Julius. He was such a happy and healthy pup just up until yesterday and now he is gone.

Yes the spirit goes on, the only thing I keep thinking now is he is free from pain and is in a better place.

This came at a very bad time. My son's just finished recording their CD yesterday which came out awesome and everyone was on such a high and then my doggie Julius died.

In the words of George Carlin , when buying a pet you are purchasing a small tragedy.

im very sorry to hear that. it might make you feel better to know that you could have saved a dogs life. i saw the link you posted to that petfinder site and ended up fostering a dog from my area that didnt have a home, i probably would never have done it if you didnt post the link on here.

Jasmine, I am very sorry to hear about your dog. That is very sad, but you are right. If he is not pain now. Also, congrats to your son, I hope that his CD does well!
