I use them, not sure about the shaving part.. but it makes money on traffic that's hard to convert.

i used to promote it heavily... from my experience, it doesn't look like they shave. if they DO, then it's maybe 1% at MOST (so i HIGHLY doubt it).
money....yes, the toolbar has a potential to make some SERIOUS bling. back in the paris hilton fiasco, i paid a dude 50$ to post my popup code cause he was getting 300K uniques per day... mind you, the pop up was only up for about an hour and a half, and i made triple what i paid him. the downside: it pisses alot of people off, and sometimes, depending on the clients innet permissions, will auto install WITHOUT prompting the user. i caught quite a bit of hatemail from that. all in all, if you don't give a fuck about your visitors, post the shit outta the toolbar.... if you want respectable traffic... be wary when posting. i only leave it on my 404 page these days. good luck |

It works the best like this: "Poping up the Active-X Security Alert right away is probably the most effective way to promote the search bar and maximize your installs. Users are prompted YES or NO." , i.e. the entrance Automatic prompt.
They don't pay for all countries, there is a list of countries they pay for, the good ones, of course. From their TOS: "Gamma agrees to pay its Webmasters for installations only, and only for traffic coming from the following countries : Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States. The Webmaster is paid 0.15$ per installation. " So it's good for non-converting such traffic (because the automatic prompt also pisses surfers off, although it's more efficient), if highly converting, send it to paysites. If you need a ref. or anything else let me know. ![]()

I have used it in the past it pays fairly well. But because they often get picked up by virus software, you have to place them very carefully so as not to associate them with your site.

i hadn't thought of that... how would you go about placing it so it doesn't seem like it's originating from your site? |
