Fender strats are always the way to go for quality, unless you want a flashy designed one

uhm, judging your topic I would say: buy the cheapest and go practise a lot first.

The guitar you want to buy, should depend on what kind of sound you want, what kind of music style you play, what kind of amplifier you use, your budget, etc, etc.

your sound will be a combination of your guitar (body, pickups, snairs), your amplifier / head and even the cables you're using.

My bands name is Miller, and we play music like Thursday, Thrice Alexis On Fire ect. We're a screamo, emo, hardcore band. So we're gonna have very technical crazy guitar, bass and drum parts.

The tone is much different than a strat. It's a little heavier

I have bought a few guitars from this guy: http://www.chrisguitars.com he's always got a great assortment of stuff, and has no problem giving you a return if you don't like something you get from him. I check out his site every day to see whats new, sometimes a real gem pops up and I pounce on it.

wanktank,

first get your facts straight, Thursday isn't emo, screamo or hardcore (musicwise). For some real good emo/screamo listen to "Closure" or "Frail". I probably would label Thursday "indie" with a metal touch.

second, that kind of music isn't really "technical", better take bands as Converge or Dillinger Escape Plan for influence there

I would suggest you just go spitting through all your cd's and see what sound definitly makes you want to kill, try to find out the gear the guy's playing on and go for that sound .

Ow, and I don't know if you guys consider yourself hardcore in any way, otherwise there isn't another option than to go for the Gibson SG.

good advice...

IMHO you can't beat a Gibson Les Paul... awesome sound. A friend of mine has severeal but the 1976 Les Paul Original has the sweetest sound !!

and you need a decent stack to go with it...

My house got broken into a few years ago and someone stole 4 of my guitars and my crate half stack, only guitar I have now is a strat autographed by Jake E Lee that stays in its case

Back in 92 I had the sweetest guitar ever, it was a neck-thru-body Charvel, I picked it up in a pawn shop for $350. Dont know what was so special about it but it was so easy to play and the sound was just perfect to me. Wish I had never sold it.

My second favorite was my Gibson studio model. It was heavy, but it sounded great.

if you really want to get a life long guitar you gotta go into the store, have em put new strings on the fucker (or buy a set and do it yourself) and play it through YOUR amp ... also it depends on your budget ... i ordered a New Old Stock 69 Strat and it sounded like ass ... sent it back. so now im hunting for original electronics to put in a NOS strat, might try some of the different year versions, but i prefer the larger headstock of the 69 version ...

so for now i stick with the gibson SG with the triple rectifier ... serious fucking noise ;)

all depends on your price point, are you getting a guitar or the guitar you will have forever ... make those salespeople work! go play stairway to heaven at full blast they love that ;)

hmmm, funny you mention him in this topic. Rage against the machine's frontman, Zack de la rocha, was as well fronting "Inside Out" (a legendary hardcore band) back in his days, ratm was one of the biggest "mainstream" bands that had it's roots and most of it's influences from hardcore, one of the reasons the band is extremely politcally outspoken.

no offense bro, but I'm active in hardcore (punk, not porn ) for over12 yrs now and would like to think I know something about the culture . And although the term "emo" nowadays is often used as synonym for "indie" it isn't completly correct (some diehard youth crew kids I know also might say that emo/indie stuff isn't hardcore, but that's another discussion).

But hook me up on ICQ or something, bro. I love talking music and hardcore related stuff in particular and can hook you up with tons of bands, labels, hc guitar nerds, etc, but I guess it's a little bit off topic here

I play drums in a band myself, we just released our debut 7" on one of Europe's leading hardcore labels and we're working hard now on writing material for our upcoming full length.

I have a 50s reissue strat and an Ibanez S470. I would have to say that both are decent guitars and good for beginers but if you really want something that will turn heads and get you a great tone go for a PRS. I can hit a note on my strat (which has a serymour duncan double humbucker in it) and hit the same not on my friends PRS and his note will sustain at least a good 30 seconds or more longer than mine. Better wood, better pickups, better craftmanship all make for a better guitar... But, after saying all that, what really makes your guitar sound good is you. So whatever you get, just play the hell out of it every second you can. Good luck!

Touche.
When I say "Emo" I mean that more new age screamo, screaming raw but someitmes melodic sound. Its like me saying "Wow that band is very punk" When you can't really say one band is one thing anymore. I'm sure you agree, you and all your knowledge of the scene. For sure ill hit you up on icq.

I love Bc Rich's Designs, their so sweet.
How much did that warlock cost you?
yeh mick from slipknot plays a 6 string custom warlock. the guitar set me back around 1000 aussie new a couple of years ago, so i dunno what that is now days considering how much the exchange rate has changed since. as for B.C.Rich sucking, yeh their low end stuff is utter crap, you could make the same generalisation about gibson etc if they didn't have their other brand of budget shit guitars. If i was to buy a new guitar i'd look into ESP for sure.

shipping would be expensive, but for a good price it may be worth it.
Get your ass down to Song Bird Music down on Queen Street West ...it is between Bathurst and Shaw. The have a great selection of new and used guitars and the staff there know their shit. I have bought and sold guitars there for years and have always been happy.
