Check out the DVD Burners on http://www.NewEgg.com.
They have the best prices and you can click and read customer reviews for every one.

I picked up a 8x Optorite DD0401 recently. Works great.
Paid about $125.00 w/ a black face. 8X DVD+R 4X DVD-R 4X DVD+RW 2X DVD-RW 40X CD-R 24X CD-RW Tip: Some 4x media burns at 8x. Check out the manufactures website. |

Is DVDXCopy worth the money for backing up movie DVD's, or is there something that does the same thing for free? (other than a cracked version of DVDXCopy)

i'd say the best all-around burner is the sony +/-. it seems to have the most versaitility and playability in all set-top players. they just released an internal 8x model, or you can get the 4x in internal/external.

they make a cheaper model that looks like their standard cd/cdr drives, it's quite a bit cheaper and basically the same drive, but i hear it's intended for oems and sony has like _no_ support for it. haven't heard much about the new 8x, but it looks the same, and is probably the same drive, if the speed jump is that big of an incentive.

I just got one myself last week. This is the first DVD recorder I ever owned/purchased. After doing some research about what to get DVD+R or DVD-R I narrowed it down to either the latest Sony drive or the latest Plextor drive. I ended up getting the latest Plextor drive from New Egg. I got this one, The reason why I got this one is because this drive is guaranteed to burn at 8x on 4x media. 8x media is either a) really hard to come by and b) its still very expensive. 4x media you can pick up anywhere for a very reasonable price. The drive is also capable of burning in DVD+R and also DVD-R format and you can use re-rewriteable disc so this drive is essentially a DVD+RW and DVD-RW combo drive. This together with the fact that it's guaranteed to burn at 8x on 4x media made it the #1 choice for me. All the discs that I've made with it so far can play on both my PS2 and also on my Toshiba DVD player no problem. This drive also comes in white/beige. If/when you get this drive head over to the Plextor site and download the latest firmware. It's very painless to do. The only thing that sucks is that if you get the non-OEM package from NewEgg they will charge you an extra $7 bucks for software with the drive which I don't recommend you use. It's comes with Easy CD creator and I've read on the net that it has some issues with XP. I got the OEM version of the drive that doesn't come with software and got Nero 6 also from NewEgg to handle all my burning needs.

I second that. DVD Shrink is awesome and it's completely free. There is other software out there for those who are interested in this. Check out http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ and http://www.afterdark.com/ for guildes and what software to use.

I have a dvd burner and it SUCKS . Seems like it takes like 8 hours to "transcode" a 1 hr movie.... It takes FOREVER to transcode a mpeg to a movie on dvd, you have to do it overnight.
And you need a lot of space on your pc to burn movies. I think the dvd burner makes an extra copy of the mpeg on your pc and it hogs up all the space. Is this normal? |

If it takes you 8 hours to encode a 1 hour file something is either a) not set up correctly with the software you are using or 2) you don't have enough power in your computer. Post some specs of both the hardware and software you use and we'll see if we could help you. |
