I have a dvd burner and it SUCKS . Seems like it takes like 8 hours to "transcode" a 1 hr movie.... It takes FOREVER to transcode a mpeg to a movie on dvd, you have to do it overnight.
And you need a lot of space on your pc to burn movies. I think the dvd burner makes an extra copy of the mpeg on your pc and it hogs up all the space.
Is this normal?

Unfortunately yes it's normal. What do you use to encode your files ? TMPEnc is really fast at converting to an MPEG-2 (DVD format). It also depends a lot of your hardware. My DVD burner is in a 2GHz Athlon XP box. If I use Nero to create a DVD from scratch with my own custom menu, menu music, animated thumbnails and 4GBs of data it will take about 4hrs on that box. If you don't care about making your menus pretty and having all the eye candy you could just encode with TMPEnc and perhaps you will get faster results. Also you might want to try DVD Shrink. That program is super fast also (by super fast I mean 2+ hours).
If it takes you 8 hours to encode a 1 hour file something is either a) not set up correctly with the software you are using or 2) you don't have enough power in your computer. Post some specs of both the hardware and software you use and we'll see if we could help you.
