Satellite Radio

My birthday is coming up soon and a friend of mine wants to get me satellite radio for my car, Sirius, just wondering if anyone had any experience, positive, negative, to share.

Mostly I like rap, hip-hop, and rock/punk. Not classical rock, not oldies, not old pop, just pretty much rock, punk rock, and the usual hip-hop garbage. Although in moderation trance, techno and all of that can be tolerated

I have Xm, had it for a few years now..

It works in just about every location in the states and most parts of Canada.

Problems, it will stop playing for a second on some overpasses, parking garages, your garage, etc.. Tall buildings and mountains are a pain too. Some parts of Texas to NV that it won?t work in either, guess that is to be expected through.

The music.. Rock stations, it has a good amount of them, but you need to like just about every type of rock, they play lots of bad shit. The classic rock station plays some good stuff just go to wait 2 or 3 songs to hear a song that is worth a shit.

Rap, they have RAW probably the best rap station I have heard, nothing is edited, but again they play a lot of odd, bad songs.

Trance/techno.. My lord the 2 worst channels in the world are on XM radio for that.

It's not commercial free either.. News repeats rather badly.

Good points.. If you travel and travel a lot it will help with radio/cd dead times. The comedy channels are pretty good (2 of the 3 are) and the normal stations do play good stuff you just have to flip through and find them.

Got an Ipod but no good way to get it playing in the car. All of the FM transmitters suck ass, just makes you wonder why they dont start making line-in's on the cars system to begin with so you can easily plug in some mp3 player.

Don't want to fidget around with the car's system too much because its on a lease, giving it back in about a year. The Sirius I can just add without having the shop doing too much work, I think in the trunk are already outlets for hooking into the car's system prewired, and I'll tell them to not cut any holes in any panels.

Plus this is free, then again I guess I could ask for an mp3/cd player instead... ?

But then I still have to go out and get the songs, I burn CDs for the car, but not all that often. Have a road trip coming up next week too, don't want to be bored out of my mind, 10 hours there and another 10 back.

Go with XM - they've done a better job of grabbing the market and will likely be around long. Plus, all the music channels go 100% commercial free on the 1st.

Had sirius in my rental on the way to vegas and back (13 hours each way). Very easy to use, plenty of stations many grouped by genre that include those in your list. Was comerical free except the occassional "your listing to sirius the comerical free network".

On a few very brief occassions it did cut out for a second or two. Primarly when I pulled into a gas station that had a large metal canopy. It did work fine though in the parking garages.

Has damn easy navigation once ya get the idea of what channels are which. All in all I was very impressed with it.

The friend thats getting it for me is getting it through a friend who sells them, and he had his installed for free. She was chilling with him and she said that the music stations rock, well at least for rap/hip-hop. I mean all I will be stuck with is like the $10 or whatever a month for service and only for a year after which I return my car and if Im not happy I can get XM. I think XM maybe better, not really sure, but she can get a good deal on Sirius through her friend and its free for me anyway right?

I have XM in my car and I love it. I have a friend that went with Sirius and he's pretty happy with it too. I think once XM goes ad-free on Feb. 1st then it will be the best choice.

My friend had XM and he loved it, got the antenna mounted inside his Audi and had good reception in the city, but this is a gift for free so no cant exactly haggle and say he Sirius is great but I rather XM, lol.

Don't get it twisted. Sirius is the only way to go. I have tested both extensively. Sirius is the only provider that has it's own network and is 100% digital. XM leases off of DirectTV satellites and uses repeaters in urban areas. XM has done a better job of marketing to the masses. However Sirius is the best. That's why car manufactures like BMW an GM have chosen it as there installed option. The programming, DJ's and sound quality is better on Sirius.

i didnt like the music on it, to be honest. for the price of it, i'd rather just listen to my radio and if i didnt like any songs on my pre-sets or if it was commercials, i can hit the "CD" button and play a cd of mine. found that i liked that better than Sat. radio.

you may like it, alot do! just wasnt for me, thats all.

Over here in NY I'm sick and tired of the radio, everyone plays the exact same garbage. If I lived in Florida I think I would probably be just satisfied with listening to the radio because they usually have much better DJs but over here its definitely time for a change, and I'm just not all that quick on burning new CDs for the car.

I just bought a new cd/mp3 player for my car and it's XM compatible. I'm debating whether I should have it activated or not now.

If your local radio stations suck as much as mine I would say go for it. Havent really yet looked into if they want a long term contract or not but if you can get something thats more month to month I think its worth it to check it out. Although if you burn some huge mp3 mixes you might be all set with that. Im just running out of shit to listen to in the car and I can't keep burning new CDs.

When you buy it? It's been up like crazy over the past year last time I checked. Wasn't it (satellite) the second thing behind DVD players to reach 1 million units sold the fastest, something near 1 year or so.

You dont have a randomize setting on your huge mp3 CD's, Im still using the plain old CD's but my friend has mp3 CDs in his car and he can set them up to play random tracks. Burn a couple hundred songs on a CD from all different genres, put them on random and it's almost like radio, although its true, even with a huge CD you still more or less know whats on it.

oh..yeh i can randomize it but even at that. I know I'm gonna skip through some songs and then after listening to the cd maybe twice or less, I've pretty much picked out a few songs that become my favorite out of the hundred that i burnt.

I'm weird like that.hehe
how much is it? like is it a monthly charge? 10$?
