50 Underpaid designers!

"A good design here will help getting other work... "

Bullshit.
Its about money period.
A portfolio sells your services and anyone that see's a decent portfolio or is demonstrated your work will get ya a new client.

Your better off posting and using your sig to your advantage than design for free or non guranteed commision.

"And still it got me to notice some people that I haven't checked out before."

And at the same time running a nice ad campaign for the contest provider at the expense of the designers effort.

From reading this thread ya see a kick ass logo done for 75.00 bucks so that designer must be desperate and in turn you save money when you contact em cuz you know he will do it cheap.

He undersold himself in that contest...
He will definatly under sell himself again.

hey look call me a cynic but i've been watching these design contest threads for a while. I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but there are a few people here who arn't actually designing squat. They're using the same few backgrounds, and slapping text over the top.

The cards look kinda ok ish because the photo they're using is cool, but I'm wondering a) if they have the license for it, and b) if they realise what CMYK actually is.

just my

Wasn't pointing any fingers at you.

seriously, go back and look at the first page, and i can see one person using the same elements as he used in another contest, and i can see one dude who has repeated a background i bet he didnt do and hasn't even done it seamlessly.

geez

er no, that's actually not what i said. The CMYK point was just one tiny point.

I'm a qualified graphic designer and 3d animator, i might not know much about it all but i do know just a little bit.

I own the license AND reseller rights to each and every pic I am using in contests.

When I am doing a design or layout, I like to play with background variations.

Re CMYK, I am familiar with dtp.

Just thought you'd know... I am sure you wanted to post it in another thread and contest just closed earlier today.

Well I wasn't gonna poiunt fingers, but when you put it this way

If you were familiar with DTP, then you wouldnt be doing things like putting white on white and huge fucking seams.

You can all call me whatever you like, but it's just an observation.. if you want design done, contact a designer privately and work with them to ensure a quality product. If you're looking for business cards etc, get someone local so you can feel the stock see the final products.

id like to say that doing these things for smaller monies gets exposure and can add these to portfolio and then if the perosn likes the work they might hire the winner in future to do custom work if the designer did exact work etc etc so doing it for small price is not a complete waste

btw when does this contest end anyways?

Why put a finished product online if you don't even know if you'll win? Sounds more productive to put a good draft up and then perfect it when it's chosen. Do you know how many contests there are on this board? How time consuming would it be to post a finished product for each one without having a guaranteed avenue of payment?!? Sounds like you're just looking for a reason to argue...

I just got back in and WOW, thanks for all the great entries! I was happily surprised to see so many new entries and as I said originally, there are certainly several that are winners. The hardest part is going to be picking just one. I'm going to show them to some others in the office tomorrow morning and pick the winner tomorrow afternoon. Any last minute entries are welcome. So far Divx, playgirl, onno, and almighty are my favorites. Thanks again!

I was talking about proper photo copyright, license and that i know what CMYK is. I don't even know when this contest ends so I entered having the flu, high fever, you name it.

I regret that this took this turn. I was indeed grateful for your unsolicited advice, but now I have to say that I do not want any more advice from you.

I did.. especially the white on white which i thought particularly funny when he pointed out the blue on blue of the other guy's design which wasn't as bad as his. (no offense intended digifan just an observation)

It reminded me of a TV show about String Theory and the idea of multiple universes in different dimensions that existed in layers next to each other. The show talked about how universes may occasionally bump into each other in their motions and that might be a "Big Bang" etc. etc.

Since your company is called "eDimensional" I thought it would fit really well.

note to other designers, this is an excellent response to potential clients justifying your use of pretty shapes.
it could also have mentioned:

a. extensive use of diagonals which invoke the impression of movement, and hence bestowing on the company kinetics and energy.

b. the use of blue and white reminiscent of energy and electricity to denote both as well as the electronic/internet feel.

c. could have mentioned "synergy" at least once.

the next class will talk about how the blank bit you left out is actually "white space" that acts as a counter-balance to the rest of the design as well as a clever mechanism drawing your eye to the important information.

c. could have mentioned "synergy" at least once.

the next class will talk about how the blank bit you left out is actually "white space" that acts as a counter-balance to the rest of the design as well as a clever mechanism drawing your eye to the important information.
d. if you tilt your head at approximately a 48 degree angle, the shapes will slightly resemble the letter "e" which further represents an "e" dimension

you forgot

f. the use of letterboxing creates the impression that beyond the card and into the company is contained a great energy force waiting to be unleashed upon users of said company.

g. the use of chrome invokes a mechanical clean efficiency especially when coupled with the energy it is containing, as well as conductivity and synergy (at least twice remember) with bricks and mortar B2B or B2C.

h. positioning of the logo on the shine point of the chrome implies power and light emanating from the company.

i. never mention you came up with an idea watching tv. No matter whether it's the discovery channel you will come across like a procrastinating tv-watching designer.

j. you can never edit a post fast enough to take out the and come up with something semi-witty without someone seeing it.

I am not offended at all and I did the text with a very dark blue stroke or contour just forgot to update the small jpeg files and now it makes no sense at all. I got side tracked with this flu and feel shitty.

I like the other guy's design a lot and I am sure I did not offended him either.

Not sure if you realized but "our friend" deleted my response for the copyright of photos used in contests when quoting me.. and what made me post before was that he was wondering if we have the license for them or just steal them?! It is insinuation.

I see.. that was the part that did upset me yesterday, the licensed photos issue
Btw the funny thing is that all my entries were updated in psd format and forgot to resave and upload the low res jpegs I posted here in time.. so I just submitted two of them before gong to bed. Nevermind.
And I am a girl, really

And the winner is, PLAYGIRL!

Thanks to all those that entered. Playgirl, please ICQ me or tell me how to get in touch with you. We have a couple of modifications we'd like to see before it's print ready. The text on the left side blends a bit too much with the gray and the al in eDimensional blends too much with the white. If we can clean that up a bit we should be good to go.

Almighty, you were a very close #2. I'll certainly let you know if we end up needing another design.

Thanks again to everyone and I hope all of you get more work out of this.
