Two obvious main reasons:

Where water is, there might be life or may have been in the past.

Future colonization of other planets is alot easier with water available.

The real reason is - it shakes the foundations of religion on this planet - which has killed more people then all diseases put together.

And I welcome it.

Millions of Muslims thinking their religion is the only correct one.
Millions of Catholics thinking their religion is the only correct one.
Millions of ...

Have at it.

And just why do you think finding life on Mars will make the slightest bit of difference?

For many hundreds of years the Church taught that we were the centre of the universe. They quickly adapted when they couldn't ignore the truth any longer.

"Religion" will undergo a profound change once we prove life exists everywhere. And it does. As all evidence here on earth proves.

From the deepest hotest mines ...
from the coldest regions ...etc
life exists - even without sunlight on the ocean floors.

Do you think that "Martians" believe in "Ala" or "Jesus" or "Mary"...
or do you think that most of this planet will grow up INSTANTLY ?

I agree 100%. Religion loosely defined by functional sociological standard doesn't necessarily constitute mainstream such as Muslim, Hindu, or Christianity.

how the hell do you know that if there were other intelligent life out there, that they themselves did/do not have their own religions?

i could be wrong, but i know some people's interpretations don't necessarily rule out the idea of life on other planets in the bible. besides, why have just one planet of fun, why not create several types of life forms and see what prospers?

Geesh what a surprise. Theres trillions of stars planets etc...a person who thinks earth is the only place with life is pretty thick.

No im not talking about ufos and crap like that...but come on, if they already discover water so close to use you can already guess that theres way more out there. You dont need a big brain for that.

They had it on CNN this morning, but the water is in the form of ice on the southern ice cap. I believe it.. It's really not all that unbelievable, considering there is much erosion on the surface of mars that could only have been created by the flow of water. Obviously that means there WAS water there, it's not that far of a reach to think it still might be.

Anyway... I guess its just pure coincdence that Bush was met with tons of criticisim about wanting to go to Mars...

now viola! Water on Mars.

-- we have to go now & no more critics.

Bush always gets what he wants

I wonder what's really up with Mars... why does the Bush administration want to go there so badly now?

When we look at Mars, we see the Earth's future in 500 million-1 billion years...........a wastleland that once supported life.....thats why Mars fascinates us so much, like dinosaurs, we are glimpsing the future or ourselves in the end

sigh.........its the way of things

Religion will survive regardless. Every time that something taken for granted by religious people is disproven, they simply assimilate the new data and reinterpret the words of their bible.

What? Evolution really occurs? Well, then that's just part of God's plan. What? Dinosaurs? Well, they must have coexisted with man. What? Life on Mars? Well, God must have created life on more planets after he finished with ours.
