To wear a helmet or to not wear a helmet...

Do you believe there should be a law requiring helmets for motorcycle drivers?

Thoughts please

After personally being in a motorcycle accident, I honestly think if you don't wear one, you're an idiot.

BUT.....IMHO, if you don't want to wear one, that's fine IF you sign a piece of paper that says you agree to not get a dime of taxpayer's money to cover your medical expenses or the care of your family in case an accident injures your brain or kills you.

If its okay to have seatbelt laws then its okay to have helmet laws. Either both go away or both are mandatory. Thats my take on the whole thing.

Of course I believe that state lotteries are the most hypocritical tax on the poor and stupid ever and either gambling of ALL forms is illegal across the board or NO gambling period. So I guess I'm a binary extremist... ;)

nationwide??

I think it should be up to the rider. Or just for those riders under 18.

Insurance ? It is required to have. If you ride you are fool not cover yourself.
A big reason why I stopped riding was the helmet.
Helmet Laws sucks !

If we want to save those without the common sense to wear one yes I think it should be a law nationwide. Here in NY it already is a law.

For the life of me I cant see why someone wouldnt wear one. The same goes for snowmobilers and ATVers. I still see guys not wearing them. Last week snowmobiling I came off once on an icy corner and flew ten feet wacking my head a few times. I got up checked over my ride and took off with nothing more then a bruised knee. Without a helmet I wouldn't have gotten up.

Insurance isn't a requirement in every state, at least not full coverage. Liability is the minimum. Liability isn't going to cover you if you crack your head open.

And besides that, I know numerous people who drive without any type of insurance. Dude, we live in SoCal. Do you not see all the illegals running around?

Minimal basic insurance is required, that's all. Do you honestly believe that the majority of motorcycle riders have health insurance in excess of $2mil to cover a brain injury?

And for those wondering, this isn't the only dumb thing I don't think taxpayers should be footing the bills for - non usage of seat belts, sickness due to obesity/smoking/etc. are just a few of the things I think you should be held personally responsible for.

It should be a law that you are a mandatory organ donor if you dont wear a hemlet.

I had a serious accident on Aug 7th last year. My helmet was busted, my head wasnt. Helmets save lives.

People think it's "cool" to not wear helmets.

Once those people get into an accident... They deserve it.

Here in Cali.. its mandatory...

in AZ at my river pad.. it is not mandatory to wear helmut.. and it still freaks me when I see guys/gals with no helmut ridin down the damn highway at 65 mph...

I ride my DS650s (monster quads) offroad.. would not consider ever riding without helmut and gear.

I ride my xp1200s (monster PWCs) on the river.. and would not consider riding without helmut and gear.

Hell.. I dont get on my mountain bikes without helmut and gear.

and I think helmuts should be mandatory.. hell .. I dont wanna see no ones damn brains all squished outta their ears...
and I dont want my tax payin dollars paying to slosh no ones brains back in their heads neither ....

live to ride... ride to live... ride and live... wear the damn helmut..

Big B

If you are under a certain age.. say 21 to 25..

and as long as you carry your own health insurance..

then I feel you are fine..

b/c
most motorcycle accidents occur with new immature riders... and me as a taxpayer hates picking up the tab...

People who don't wear helmets are simply one thing...

IDIOTS.

You might as well make reservations at the funeral home now.

Read my post. I did not say anything about the "minimal required by law insurance" I said you are a FOOL if you do not cover your self......There is a huge difference. If you have ridden , you have been in some close calls. You know how dangerous it can be.
What about leg , back, neck, arm and the other countless injuries ? So make sure people HAVE TO wear a fire proof suit, approved boots, gloves, kidney belt.......etc.
Next it will be all us surfers HAVE TO wear life vests , or maybe just ban the sport all together, because it is dangerous. I agree no wants to see anyone elses brains on the ground. But understand it is just one more thing taken away from you.

Helmet Law sucks !

I agree that tax payers should not be responsible and I am sure it is safer but it should be your choice. Why should the govn't be allowed to create laws like this?

i live in myrtle beach sc, we have no helemt laws and a bike week once a week. every bike week they scrape the brains of some dumb drunken biker off the roads. with out fail, every year.

i dont really care if there is a law, you should wear one out of common sense.

reasonable people need minimal "government".

laws are mostly enacted to control the unreasonable members of society.

since i ride a sportbike i will tell you that i always wear a quality helmet and other protection. you can actually ride faster with a helmet on because you can see where you're going better.

there are two schools of thought re: helmet laws.

one school of thought is that if you do not have a helmet law society has the benefit of culling some of it's least intelligent members, in their primary reproductive years.

if you do have a helmet law, society has less of a financial burden taking care of the uninsured who become vegetables from riding bikes sans helmet.

so it's a balance.

the experienced, serious motorcyclist wears a helmet. he doesn't need a law to understand it's the smart thing to do.

I was in motorcycle accident a year ago and tore off my heel. I am still recovering. My only fault was riding with an amatuer.

I figure that if some moron doesn't want to wear a helmet or buckle up, then they can go for it. Darwin awaits those folks.

I, however, don't want to pay a damn cent for the treatment when they get hurt. That means that I believe that if someone doesn't wear a helmet or seatbelt and gets into an accident, then insurance shouldn't cover the injuries, nor should state/national funds pay for their hospital bills.

Arizona does not have a helmet law. If I was not wearing one when my head hit the curb I would never have survived to write this.

Law or no law you should wear one. If you don't think so go into an Arizona Emergency room.
