Also, in college you are exposed to a lot of subjects that you probably would not expose yourself to on your own. I know there are a lot of things I learned in college that I wouldn't have bothered to learn if I hadn't been required to. I think education makes you a more well rounded person and improves your critical thinking. It also gives you a chance to improve your interpersonal skills and learn to budget your time in a controlled enviornment. I don't see how college could do anything but improve your chances of succeeding in business. |

universities have great libraries and people to talk to about cool ideas, as for the actual courses or a formal programs - probably lots of fun when you get to the phd level

I am glad I went to college, I learned alot about a variety of subjects and met ALL Sorts of People. It was great and I never would have used the internet without attending college. Go to college, even if it is 2 year degree. |
Education is always a good thing. University isn't always the best place to get it, but for a lot of people it provides a nice framework and nice carrot at the end of the day to motivate you.
Some things I wouldn't bother doing at university, like Arts, and perhaps even business, because for the most part you can learn these out of a book. I have three degrees, and it isn't the *facts* that you remember It's the way of thinking about problems that sticks with you. Even though my degrees have nothing to do with porn, I apply critical thinking to it every day, and it definitely helps. Of course you have to consider the opportunity cost. God knows how much $ I sacrificed by not having the time to work on business. I could not really take significant amount of time off my studies to concentrate on business. If your degree can wait, maybe it'd be better to concentrate totally on business while the opportunity is still huge. |
well a degree can help give you more knowledge than you would have otherwise. but going to a decent school and taking the right program helps a lot more. the networking is very valuable as well if you're going to a good school.
you tell me you won't better off with a bsc in econ from wharton? but at the end of the day if you're an idiot, going to school will mean you're an idiot with a degree. |
The major probelm i see is kids going to a 20k a year school with some bullshit major.Afterwards they can't find a job with their major and they wind up working some $7 a hour job and are 80k in debt

for me it was just about doing something I wanted to do and learning about a topic I was interested in...it's relevance is what I make it... but in general, I will encourage my offspring to go to college not merely for a 'future employement' thing but more of a 'life & social' learning experience and hopefully they take something interesting while they're at it... |
It is not a waste of time. The education in college obtained in classrooms is just a fraction of the education happening in that institution.:2 cents: College just "frames" all these educational opportunities in one place and time. I'm not knocking other sources of education, but for the vast majority of people this is the place to learn.

I doubt that having a degree makes one more successful. However, I am glad that I have my BA from a university plus master classes. It is a sense of accomplishment.
Having a BS or BA gives you the opportunity to continue with your education to advance. |
Baal what school is this?

But a college degree doesn't make up for a lack of talent, abilities, and ambition. I wouldn't encourage someone to quit running a successful business just to get a college degree, but it gives you something to fall back on. By getting a degree, not only do you open doors for yourself, but you also develop your character and mind. Even Bill Gates (a college drop out) said that- "nobody should drop out of college unless they believe they face the opportunity of a lifetime. And even then they should reconsider." Full article here http://www.microsoft.com/billgates/C...ay/11-4col.asp Anyways, it's probably not in anyones best interest to ditch out on college unless they feel really secure about their future. And anyone talented enough to become a successful entrepreneur, or even the ambition to start their own company probably would benefit from getting a college degree. I think you get my point. |
on average the higher your education the more money you earn.. so theres something to it lol.

Although I was college prep all through high school, I joined the Marines because I school bored me. After four years of being a Marine I got out, and discovered that the real world was more difficult than I had imagined. After almost ten years of fucking around in low paying jobs, I went to college and took computers.
My degree is hanging on the wall behind me; I haven't looked at it since I put it up there. However, I can tell you I was hired with Lightspeed because I had just graduated. It depends on where you want to go in life. Most of us will be working for the man. When an employer has to people wanting the same job and one of them has a college education, guess who's going to get the job. I took computers. However, computers has changed so much since I graduated that it pretty much makes my degree useless - Everything I learned in college pretty much does't exist these days. |

I have so many views and opinions on this thread......
#1. My man went to college for about a month. He hated it. Now hes making more than my mom, A Teacher, does. #2. I have been through every situaton in life; THATS what education is!!!!!!!! LEARNING HOW TO LIVE LIFE!!!!!!! I've learned that part.......now, at age 23, Im ready to go to College to become a Business Major. But I dont get how going to college RIGHT after high school is really healthy. I wouldnt change a thing!! Im glad I experinced what life really is about! My :2 cents: |
Depends on what school you goto.
For example stanford or harvard and the networking that u pick up will be worth millions. |

without a doubt, the best days of my life were in my University years...

Personally, I only want to go to school to learn something that will make ME money. Some people might thinkg learning is enjoyable, and like to learn for the sake of learning, but I am not one of them. I only want to do something if it will help me make money, since that's all I care about, otherwise there is no point.
That's just for me, it might be different for other people. Anyways, I do need help picking a major. For all you BUSINESS, or FINANCE majors, does it consist of a lot of really advanced math beyond Calculus? Is the math really hard? It's been like 7 years when I went to high school and I sort of forgot how to do Math, lol. When I took the assesment test they told me I had to take Math 070 which is intermediate algebra lol :helpme before I could even take College Algebra which is Math 100. When I was younger I also had a lot of problems with math in school. Does business school involve a lot of very intensive math? What's a major that produces the most income without a lot of Math/Chemistry/Science classes? I am only interested in majors that have jobs that are high paying, not interested in art, english or the like... |

wow. within the biz, all i care about is profit - but this biz if hardly all i care about, or am interested in... facinating. |

financially because I have to pay off student loans, and worry about bills as well, financial security is important for me. I am not referring to profit because I'm just referring to majors that have good job opportunities with high income potential, I don't want to waste time, effort, and money studying something and not be able to find a job or find a very low paying job, I just want to make it worth my while. That's all I'm saying :helpme |
that's cool. but the real value of University is learning to think and adapt, as well as the experience itself.
the day Universities become nothing more than job factories for the masses, is the day Western civilization truly declines. |
I don't think anyone regrets going to college; I certainly don't.
Most of the "college is not needed for success" opinions are by those that did not go to college and still became successfull. They are trying to rub in that you wasted 4 or more years of your life, and you make less money than them. I don't have any statistics available but I would be willing to bet, that college educated businessmen are on average more successfull than a non-educated businessmen. And besides, college is fun, opens oportunities, you get to meet cool people, get exposed to fresh ideas, and you also learn something while you are at it. How can you go wrong? |
