there's lot's of people who make big money as entrepeneurs and that's not something you learn, you've either got it or you haven't. a degree wouldn't make any difference to these people. but not everyones an entrepeneur and to get a better standard of job in this world you need an education just to get an interview. i probably won't use my degree, and i'm earning 10x what my friends from uni are who are on graduate training schemes, but i'm still glad i did it. (i only bought a pc because i was starting at uni). i'm even thinking of doing an msc part-time soon. |
I wish i had done something easy and useful like Management Studies...

Well Darren I assume that a major proportion of people studying at Uni would in fact go and work for a company......
You just happen to be one of the few exceptions........ RACEMAN |

Of course sometimes it is helpful, but at the ending your bank account counts, not the university degrees. Maybe itīs worth it when porn doesnīt work any longer - who knows? |

I would have to say that education is a waste of time depending on what you choose to study and why.
If you take an arts degree just to go to university and party then you are wasting your time. Most universities have become a "money machine" based on people like that, and has decided to ignore the people that REALLY want to learn. Better to get 10 people that will fall into their "degree program" and spit em out then 1 person who is going to give them administrative hassles. If you want to be another cookie cutter graduate into an oversaturated society, seems like a wonderful way to do it. If you go to school with a goal in mind and then make that goal happen, I'd hardly call that a waste of time. I wish universities would move back to the "old way" of educating people who were intelligent, and wanted to advance themselves in a specific field simply because they thrived on learning and discovering. Not Suzy Bigtits whose daddy runs Dayton tire and he sends her to study something because he never got to. She drinks, parties, and fails half her classes @ 20k/year. Why is she even there? Why not take up a trade or get experience working. I've never heard of anyone regret being educated in something they enjoyed, and chose to become educated in that field. Remember, you should always have a plan B, no matter how well things are going for you in any field. You can make money either with or without a university or college degree. Don't think otherwise. |
A degree opens up opportunities that are otherwise closed to you... whether or not you use your knowledge in your chosen field
|
im studying 3 so obviously i dont think its a waste of time. i will get a damn good job when ive finished them too

The point of a liberal arts degree is to teach you how to learn, teach you how to be a critical thinker, and to make you a lifelong learner.
It doesn't matter how talented you are, without a degree, you only have a limited number of options. I got into the adult industry right out of high school, made a good living for several years, and thought that college was a waste of time. Unfortunately now, I have no degree, I'm not having the same success in the industry like I used to. Luckily, I grew up in a rich family, and I can go back to college to finish up my degree. But if I didn't have the opportunity to go back and get a degree, I'd be in a very tight situation right now, and I don't know what I'd be doing. Anyways, a degree opens doors for you, helps you develop your character, and allows you to learn things that you probably never would've studied on your own. I've learned a lot more being in the adult industry than I ever did in school. But school has opened my eyes to a broad range of topics that I never would've learned on my own. And once I finish up my degree, I feel I'll be head and shoulders above everyone else in the "real world." |

In how to behave I mean. Sooner or later you can't hide anonymus any longer in front of your computer insulting, for you unknown, people. |
I am and it depends on why you are doing it in the first place. If you are only doing it so that you can get a corner office one day than maybe it isn't worth it. However, if you are doing it for the sake of education - ie you want to learn something new and expand your brain - then for me it was worth it. It was also a personal accomplishment.
Some people want to climb a mountain and others want to wear a cap and gown. |
I guess the multi-millionaire you spoke with won't mind mind that the doctors that perform his bypass surgery didn't go to college.
And then of course, he won't mind that the lawyers he hires to sue the doctors that fuck up the surgery don't have a college education either. :1orglaugh |

I was lucky that I had a teacher in high school (for a number of years..she was the only one teaching that level history) that made the point of her class to teach us how to use our brain and that continued into University. It is like pushups for the brain that ensurses (particuarly in my majors) that you never look at the world the same again. |

I think education is totally important. If you are not running your own business, then you really do need to have some form of a degree. Even so, it's nice to have something to fall back on if you do have to actually get a job that is not on the web or not your own business.
Of course this may not be what everyone thinks, but for those who are just trying to have regular work life (which I realize some people would say is boring) having a degree seems to be the safe route. |

I have my opinions just like you have yours, usually I keep them to myself, as it happens Darren had the mind to ask my permission before he started this thread and in doing so it exposed my thoughts, those thoughts shared with Darren where not really open for public scrutiny........ but since I agree and you have told us all your thoughts on my point
I have only one thing to say :321GFY your such a microphallatic being |
This year i am going to finish my BA.
And also i am going to open my personal pay site (single girl), so... I hope that one day i will do more money from my degree, but at the moment, i prefer the adult bissnes. |
Not going to get too deep into this discussion, but I dont think college education is a waste of time. I even think everyone should get a master's degree at some point.
Although, there are the ones who do make it a waste of time. It's their fault. For example, if you start college and you are undecided about your major, you will waste lots of time. I pretty much knew what I was going to study in college, 2-3 years before I graduated from high school. Also if you can't finish a 4 year degree in 4 years, you are again wasting time. I got my computer science degree, got a full time job with good pay and it's been 6 months. I'm still 21. Has college been a waste of time? Hell no. |

Why become educated if you are not interested in it. "Everyone should get a Masters". Not everyone wants to go to school, and school is not for everyone. The second point is presuming that people are failing because they don't want to be there, or cannot handle the work. Not the case for all people, but for the most part I agree. |

I believe education is important if you know that's what you wanna do, not if your parents told you you need to be a doctor or a lawyer to be successful in life, or if you're just undecided.
I go to a business school and you'd be surprised how people think. I ask my friends why they're at this school. Most people answer "to get a good job" or "to get a good future". My school is a corporate automaton production facility. Drones. I go there so I can be a better rounded business person and have the theory to fall back on in case of dilemna. I didn't go for the fancy programs either, just parts that interest me and are going to serve me. I couldn't care less about the title. It's funny how society thinks really. Parents say "go to school so you can get a career and a nice paying job" but most of them never teach you HOW to make money and make money work for you. But society needs workers as much as it needs entrepreneurs. Without education do you think we'd be communicating hundreds of miles apart in real time today? Or live past 40? The thing on boards like GFY is that most of us have been spoiled by our webmaster life and we have certain traits in common as well. Instead of being the let's say "regular" worker to entrepreneur ratio of 1:100, on GFY we end up with it being 1:1 because most of us have that common trait. I couldn't be happy with working for someone else, at least not in the long run and that's why i'm putting everything i can in my favor so i don't have to do it ever again. When i hear about city bus drivers who make $56000 a year with a high school degree i wanna kill someone. I wouldn't be happy at a job like that hell no, but most people are made to have their habilities harnessed by others. Our society needs it's drones to be happy. |
didlozer what u are saying there is 100% right...
and is like a summary from Rich Dad Poor Dad, if u have not read it, get it. |

good answer. there is a saying in collegiate circles: BS = bullshiit MS = more shit Phd = more of the same, piled higher and deeper :) if you are a true entrepreneur and working for yourself, a degree "won't help you get a job". but going to a real university is a life-enriching experience, and actually finishing and getting a college degree is a certification that you can follow the rules, do a task to a certain level, and achieve a goal. and that satisfaction stays with you, and the memories of your college experience stay with you throughout your life. |

education is never a waste. anything that allows you to grow as a person is worth it. even if it doesnt increase your salary.
