edit: also most talented tarist.

As a singer he's not in the top 50. As a guitarist I'd put him in the top 10 most definitely.

More singers....

Roger Daltry
Steve Perry
Geddy Lee
Roger Waters
Michael Hutchins (INXS)(deceased)
Brad Delp

Sarah_Jayne 01-16-2004 03:45 PM

till the day I die I will be in love with Micheal Stipe's voice and writing.

runners up for me are:

Marc Bolan - T-rex (dead but ruled his era and genre with good reason)
Brian Molko - Placebo
Robert Smith - the cure
David Gahan - Depeche Mode
Feargal Sharkey - Undertones
Paul Weller - The Jam (solo as well but you asked for in a band)

you see how my tastes run ;)

Yeah, he's really good. Kind of a throwback to real singers.

I'm starting to wonder if some of the people in this thread can tell the difference between somone with a hit song as opposed to somone who can actually sing. Those two don't always go hand in hand. Just cause they have some songs we like doesn't mean they can sing at all.

and there are a ton of good singers who couldn't be a front man to save their lives.

Ahh, forgot about him. I have their CD on my desk right now (I'm a hair band freak). Outstanding range, too bad he wasted it on such crappy music. Their song "I'll Never Let You Go" was pretty good for a glam ballad. I also forgot to mention Sebastian Bach from Skid Row.

Tala 01-16-2004 04:31 PM

Geoff Tate - Queensryche

James LaBrie - Dream Theater

Freddie Mercury - Queen

Rob Halford - Judas Priest

badmunchkin 01-16-2004 04:32 PM

Yeah, but his best stuff is with Mr. Bungle, and assorted John Zorn projects that he has been involved with, IMO....

Pete Shelly from the buzzcocks.

Marks got that casual voice. It goes well with the music plays. much like every band singer. He gets extra points for playing killer guitar at the same time.

He's very talented and very creative. I heard an album he did with just his voice, was freaky, definitely not something i'd put in my playlist.

i like a lot of bands who i dont consider to have phenomenal singers, but these guys above, especially freddie ... their voices send fucking chills up my spine.

Surprised noone mentioned Bowie yet...

i love david bowie, cant express how much ... one of the greatest of all time, i have damn near every cd and im not talking greatest hits, but put him next to freddie mercury ... nah. If were talking about the best singers, i wouldnt put him. this coming from one of the biggest bowie fans on earth :2 cents:

Sarah_Jayne 01-16-2004 05:43 PM

I love Bowie (even if he didn't event glam <g> ) too but the question was about a band and whilst he played with bands he is more of a guy with a band backing him.

Definitely. But he should borow a voice from somwhere cause he never had one.

Chapter7 01-16-2004 05:46 PM

I can't listen to an entire album of either of them, the more eccentric they get the more it just gets on my nerves. But they are great singers, in terms of range, energy and song writing. Just doesnt get me off.

Now im wondering what defines a great singer. I'm sure quite a few factors. Seeing huge generation gaps in the replies. At the end it's just personal preference.

rock on :thumbsup
