For that kind of a setup I wouldnt touch anything else then
supermicro boards. We use them sometimes and they just rock! I wouldnt recommend that in a 1U server... Here is a link to a great board... Supermicro |

Get yourself a Dell Poweredge1650 or 1700 and be done with it
We've had more problems with the Supermicros than the Dell's, Plus Dell's support is second to none |

For the price of 1 higher end webserver you can usually build 4-6 mid-range webservers. Depending on the kind of hosting you are doing, it's usually adviseable to go with more servers. ie, if you are going to be doing shared/virtual hosting, then you have much higher chances of security problems that might lead to the webserver getting messed up and needing to be restored. If you have your client load balanced over 4-6 boxes then this is a lot better than having ALL of your clients down because you opt'd to build "one kick ass server". On the other hand, if you need a super powerful database or fileserver that has a specific job in mind & good reason to combine as much processing power and ram as possible, then sure... build a several thousand dollar box for it. Or maybe you live in the middle of nowhere where rackspace costs a fortune for 1u of rackspace.... that could be another reason to build a single box. |
