Here's Why Windows Sucks

Ok.. so here's the deal.

I have a sony vaio laptop that is used for development.

Off the network, meaning not connected to the net in any ways.. i fdisk, format and restore the system using the sony restore disks. remove all the worthless software that is un-needed. then connect it to the net behind a firewall and run every single update windows makes available.

So basically this machine is as updated and supposedly secure as they come now. With no 3rd party software, no email applications, NOTHING...

I remove the machine from behind the firewall, and as I'm preparing to ghost the machine so that i can restore it to it's pristine state at a later date should i need to... suddenly i start seeing alot of network activity.

Weee.. this machine has been trojaned and is participating in a DOS attack against some poor fuck!

Thanks Microsoft! There is a reason that we made the http://www.apple.com/switch/

Doesn't surprise me that Windows is so badly insecure... but with apple, they don't treat their customers that seriously I find. When a part malfunctions, you need to ship them your laptop for like a week or two. I can't afford to do that, I'm better off buying a new PC than waiting that long. Dell's onsite service is definitely what keeps me with PC's.

that's what sony gives you.
I've got 3 sets of them : )

you can't just install the OS unless you have your own OS CD (everyone should).. then cause it's sony, you still have to use the restore discs to get their custom drivers, fan/mb controls and other shit.

Windows being so buggy is an excellent sales strategy. Once Microsoft turn to lowering their price for the OS, they will begin charging a small fee per service pack downloaded.

They'll make an absolute killing, even if they charge $5 for a service pack download.

How many updates have you downloaded for Windows? 20? 30?

Just cause you happened to be behind a network that was being attacked doesn't mean a Mac is gonna help you. Trojans and worms can affect a Mac in just the same way. Machines are only as secure as you make them.

It's cause you strayed and fucked with a Sony when you should've stayed faithful to Dell.

DELL Sucks.
Gateway is worse.
Sony is better than both.

However...

There are alternatives.

Keep dreaming. You have no clue. Vaio's are pieces of shit. Faulty cooling units. The worst support, even worse than Gateway. I've owned all 3 systems in the past and Dell has been the most reliable and the best support by far.

Is this where everyone's supposed to read your sig and and conveniently figure out you're selling alienware machines? Those machines are the king of gay dude, like seriously no better than any of the other stupid proprietary bullshit that Compuq, Dell, IBM, HP and Sony are putting out.

The way to go is to slap together your own parts. Buy an Intel MB, Intel CPU, Serial ATA hd, 2 gigs of ram, 128 meg videocard, and you're set. You never have to rely on lame-ass manufacturers that the large computer companies buy cheap parts from for as cheap as they can get them for. And amazingly the drivers will be available more often than not years down the road. Wow, amazing!

Unfortunately Alienware is in the same boat with the major ones I listed, throwing a bunch of shit in a box. That's not the way to go.

not to mention the obvious, that xp and 2000 were developed on dell workstations

the development, testing and prep time for a launch of an os takes years dude.

you should know that.

i conceived of, led the team and developed a product for them called partsweb, it was their first internal support web based application. basically they would tell customers things like "oh that part will be there tomorrow" when they really had no idea whether the parts or components were in stock. so i built an app for them in my spare time that techs TO THIS DAY use at Dell in every support department and country. At the time of rollout the vp's of CS estimated that it would save dell almost 4 million bucks a year in repeat phone calls, support time etc..etc..

I got a $100 bonus check as a thank you... so i quit.

And to all you haters who wanna pretend you're smarter than me....

Just ask yourself... how much more money does Hooper have than me and did he get it by being an idiot?

What makes you think I care how much money you earn?
For all I care you can earn 1 mil a day that still doesn't give you the right to insult me for no obvious reason.

Give the guy a break folks. This shit happens to the best of us. A fresh install firewalled or not can still get infected before updating and patching the thing. I have sat behind hardware + software firewalling on a fresh install and still got infected within 2 minutes of turning on the modem. It sucks that it happens which is why I now keep critical patches stored on cd and just install them before hooking up to the net.

ah fuck it, too many grumpy people on GFY today, get the fuck back to work people!

exactly. Talk to your network techs before you blame Windows

It sucks that it happens which is why I now keep critical patches stored on cd and just install them before hooking up to the net.

ah fuck it, too many grumpy people on GFY today, get the fuck back to work people!
that is some scary shit that the firewall did not help you out

Personally I build my own machines, but I do setup and tech alot of other peoples PC's.

Whenever I'm wiping a drive and reinstalling the OS, the first thing I do upon the completion of the installation is to install the antivirus...Then connect it to the net and download the new VDF's.

That would have prevented you from having your issue Hooper.

Also, when it comes to anyone I know buying proprietary machines (Dell, Gateway, Sony, Alienware...whatever), the very first thing on my agenda is to nuke the drive, make them go get a real copy of their OS (Not the proprietary advertising mess of an OS that they always send out) and install that...Then install the AV, connect to the net, update VDF's...THEN do windows updates and install proper drivers for anything.

The only times I have ever seen anyone having an issue after the latter was completed was due to user idiocy.

Ditto. However, I will say that the WinXP Pro disk that came with my Dell 8200 had Dell's logo on the label, but the disk itself was pure Microsoft, devoid of Dell-related crap. Nice! I remember when machines (especially HPs) had their personalized OSs with tons of garbage on the OS disk that installed by default. It seems they don't do that now (probably a Microsoft licensing issue).
There is a separate Dell disk for reinstalling Dell-related software... I just skip it!

Dell's onsite service is definitely what keeps me with PC's.

Dell's support is very good. I've had only good experiences with them, just call them with model #'s and serial #'s and they will hook you up.
