Google Florida Update, SES and what to do?

Well,

For those who missed RainMaker, I thought I'd put in writing some general undertones to what we experienced last week in Chicago for Search Engine Strategies.

Attendance had been at normal levels for this JupiterMedia event until Google turned the Search world on its ear!

The Florida Update created a last minute rush of sign-ups for the extremely expensive Search Engine Strategies Seminar in Chicago.

Reason: To find out what the hell is going on?

Marshall Simmonds said it best in refering to a Danny Sullivan interview we aired asking Danny to prognosticate what he felt we'd be seeing as the big stories of SES in Chicago...and it wasn't the response Danny thought based on that interview.

The thoughts of consolidation are in every SEM's mind right now, but last week...everyone was kinda standing around shrugging or verbally bashing the impact from this major shake up.

What seemed to be a common denominator was GET SPIDER FRIENDLY and build your link popularity!

That's why we have felt great about our new Link Building program at a time like this!

Webguerilla himself, said aggressive SEO is paying off...and mom and pop is standing wondering..."did we over optimize?"

Times are strange in this space.

Last week proved that to us. It also says, that when I'm on the phone with a Backlinks.SEGuru.Net customer...and by making himself crawler friendly, deploying a link service like ours...he's seeing new Search traffic from sources he hasn;t seen before.

From one of these new sources...he's seen a sustained 3% increase in daily traffic. Search Traffic.

I'm working with him to ensure he is as crawler friendly as possible and from what Marshall Simmonds said tonite...what some of the worlds best SEO's last week said the same...

MSN is coming, Yahoo! to change soon...via INK, and Google remains...

Spiderfriendly and link laden...getcha some.

Well thats funny, Google PR specifically suggests its a bad idea to buy "backlinks" from "SEOs" unless you want to be penalized and to stay away from "bad link neighbourhoods" (this is why most jerkoff "SEOs" got there asses kicked during "florida", BTW).

Actually most jerkoff SEO's got slammed by florida for a number of other reasons. Many were not paying attention to IBL's much and did not feel linking structures were worth their time. Google seems to have employed an evolved version of the Hilltop system, and some are now seeing the possibility of localrank and applied semantics also in the florida update. Backlinks are still an important part of SEO. And yes, "Buying" links is a no-no. However I do not think SEGuru is "selling" backlinks on PR driven sites. I think his system works quite differently. He can correct me if I am mistaken.

We were happy as a big client who got hit hard, began using our service and is happier now than before. Not only is he back, but he's seeing new traffic streams.

SEO's have long listened to the engines. We've long filtered what they've said, as the engines have never lied to us have they?

That's why last week everyone stood, mouth agape, wondering what's up.

Link farms are not what I'd recommend, however...I will say...I've seen people do better recently...the more indexed links to their site they have...the better.

Funny thing is, I'm seeing AV crawl hard. Someone also told us they just put in a big equipment order.

AV is afoot.

Spiderfriendly and make sure you are in their way.

I'm tending to believe that the Florida update is going to be the wave of the future Google and my guess is they're finally encompassing some of the new technologies they've been patenting, namely the combination of PageRank and LocalRank. I'm still reviewing their patent to see what this all means but it definitely has more influences given to authoritive hubs as opposed from solely PR based model we've become used to. But if this is truly the case, then they're still in the infancy stages of implementing their new algorithm as can be seen by the wild reaction given during SES on how legitimate SEO's lost their rankings.

This also seems to coincide why some of my (formerly) highly ranked keywords have now dropped to #100 or worst even though my site's PR's are still very strong above all the other listings in front of mine. Regardless, it seems they are definitely using some form of new algorithm that we are not familiar with and I'm still trying to analyze it.

For those of you wanting to research their patent info, here are the relevant links:

http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-P...0&RS=6,526,440

Based on their patent application, the formular recalculation is determined by the relevance score values for the documents as:

NewScore(x)=(a+LocalScore(x)/MaxLS)(b+OldScore(x)/MaxOS)

Enjoy

WG, I think thats only a very small part of it. Remember that they purchased applied semantics. This is already in full use on their adsense stuff, and I think it is reasonable to say they are slowly integrating the system into the algo also now. There are already numerous cases of 2 very different results sets based on commercial and specific searches that we are seeing. Perhaps one using the new algo in it's entirety and the second using an advanced version of the older algo.

Either way, as you said, things are evolving rapidly.

Well said both Nuclei and WG...Simply put guys...its a new day.
This thread isn't to run and push our service in light of these changes...although...if the shoe fits...

Anyway, whether its SEGuru's Backlinks or its some FFA Blaster (not to be compared) or even some other link generation programs out there for trades or auto trades.

Bulk does seem to help at the moment. We've always tried to help point people in the right direction for beneficial SEO type moves for your sites. It's what we do.

Looking at it from a realistic standpoint, if the face of the M & A game that has shaken the SEM industry...the best options for SEM's now...is to make your sites as crawler friendly as possible and build links...BUIILD, BUILD, BUILD.

That's a good point, I never really considered they had the resources to apply their system on all of Google's database. I get the impression they're boiled down on adsense and adwords already using semantics' system that it wasn't feasible to implement it system wide on their free listings. It still has its faults still so I guess I was being naive thinking it wasn't ready to hit their mainstream listings yet. It definitely is a possibility.

Regardless, they're definitely changing their algorithm and over the next few weeks, there should be some tweaks and hopefully for the best.

Have you tried your service on a fresh url (disregard the client url you showed me last time)? Talking about a brand new site. I have been running my own backlink type scripts and the volume aggreggation isn't all that it used to be.

My thing is this too WG...a lot of peeps try and build links and join programs, etc.

I'm stressing the fact that if you aren't crawler friendly...you're still screwing yourself over.

This does speak to everyone...check your host, make sure you're on a unique IP, verify the ip history, spend some time making sure you are floating your real content as high on the page as possible. yada, yada...

Then build your backlinks and never stop!

That is one of them.

It does work, but I'm also evolving our technology and methodology and have been revamping it for maximum effectiveness. For us, we have started with sites from scratch...and have done so in the last 48 hours.

We'll be watching these VERY closely during this period.

We've wanted to make our platform, less obtrusive...yet more effective for dependable places to create a referrer and be less obtrusive than a search spider on the site the referrer is being created upon.

Also, multi-threading the jobs so that we can take a daily cache of the most effective places to insert client sites and instead of the job taking 18 hours..it'll take 6 mins.

We are evolving this technology rapidly to stay with what's working right now in the face of these changes.

Everyone knows how fast these engines change...so we do what works right now...and adapt when it stops working!

Let me know your results as the last freshbot update I've noticed results dropping even though more and more links are going live.

I mean, everytime he posts something, he's just pimping/defending his sites/products.

I never said I know...what I said is...we sat and talked with SEO after SEO last week in Chicago. They are all as dumbfounded as anyone else.

Common denominator was be spider friendly, don't "over-optimize", and build your backlinks.

Not sure how that's proclaiming a solution...but its called preparedness.

Everyone has to counter their ups and downs on an update at one point in time.

At this stage, yes...everyone is asking wtf to do. We're giving our opinion based upon what we are seeing in the space.

Bash if ya want, but we went to Chicago with a herd of others for the sake of reporting back to the community. Its what we do. However, don't take my word for it...ask anyone who attended.

Strange show, and lots of people looking for answers.

This is GFY, the place where people can come and let it all hang out so to speak.....I get that and even endorse that because the mission statement set forward here. However, what I did think was very cool was reading what SEGuru, Nuclei and Wired Guy had to say about things that affect us all! Wow, deep, intelligent and informative information and speculation on the prospects over at Google......Then the flow of really interesting information gets spoiled by some proclaimed JesusChrist (what a blasphemous gross nick) popping in with some ridiculous picture.....now I am not that upset about that because this is the only thing this boy has to contribute. Limited means means limited measures.

But Damn....read the information......this is relavent to everyone.....this isn't just the selling of a new product, this is conversation about something that is affecting everyone out there. He was named SEGuru, he did not give himself this name and he has earned it. Maybe he stands out more here because everyone is sharing new products and services here but they are mostly selling skin......he is here to support the people that sell the skin!

Damn.....read on and learn!

Anyone that knows me knows that I try to be a very fair person. If you were jumping down someone elses throat I would jump in. I like to be friendly with everyone, I just abhor what I percieve to be mean behavior.......

So, lets move past this!

I know, they are very different.

You know whats funny...and I'll throw this out there.

There was 1 adult company there...in the guise of Non-Adult. Diversifying their web presense...and call me shocked.

I'm standing there looking at their site...saying to myself...where have I seen this before. Looks familiar.

Turns out, WebmasterYellowPages...is the mainstream side of The Adult Chamber.

They had a booth at the show for WebmasterYellowPages and are diversifying themselves online.

Funny thing is, we have RainMaker interviews yet to come from the show floor. They were almost directly across from Google booth for Adwords.

Talk about them having the front row view of the fireworks! hehehehe
If you're going to try a Mainstream SEM show...make it PubCon in Florida. More networking oriented.

Yes, something like that.

I stopped using it months ago for fear of getting banned.

Exclude filters work. It just takes someone who cares about who they spam, to put them in.

I see none of my clients in there...and lets see...for the entrepreneur teenagers wasting their timie surfing their High Schools webstats...

They may find my non-adult B2B sites in there. There always have been and always will be abusers.

But Brujah...if we were to chase down your SEO's trial of "quality" indexed shizzy...what are we going to find...does it come in a can?

That pulpit is boring the choir. Next serman please!

Why not setup a totally different domain on a different provider and setup a blackhat operation there if you were concerned for being banned?

Most all of my sites are mainsteam.

I built it...used it for a week...starting getting emails asking why my URL was in people's logs when there was clearly no links from my domain to theirs.

I run an honest business. It just didn't feel right.

I got a Nice jump from google...and then I quit using it.

Well, i'm not refer spamming.. YET!

Few months back you started spamming my site, and I asked you to stop. And if you check the high schools stats pages there are a lot of porn sites there. Your site is there too, but at least it isn't porn right ?
