I want a Great Dane

My wife says no. My wiener dogs are undecided. I say yes and believe in the golden rule. He who has the gold makes the rules.

Anyone ever had one as a pet? I thought of just buying one for myself for Chanukah.

got me a rotti a couple months ago, rapidly outgrowing the lapdog phase but i wasn't after a lap dog.

she's doubled in weight every month since i bought her.

i like the larger breeds better personally. danes are nice animals.

Neer had a great Dane.
Get a King Sized shephard.

Doubtful you will meet a dog with more intelligence or character.
Raise it with love and it is guaranteed to be your best friend.

I had quite a few Danes growing up......LOVED those dogs. Here are some things to know about them

They only live to be 8 or 9 years old. They are so big that their hearts just give out.
They are REALLY good about dealing with little or no exercise. If you don't run them they just eat less, you will never see a fat Great Dane.
Try to get them WITHOUT the cropped ears....they look really nice that way.
They are VERY sweet and gentle dogs, they tend to be really good about not bumping into things even though they are so big.
You should be careful not to swat them too much as a puppy when you are housebreaking them. Just yelling will do. If you do you tend to make them nervous as they grow up and you will have a drooling problem.
When you go to the breeder, make sure to ask alot of questions about hip displasia. This can be a very bad problem with them.
They love to be around people, they will always like to curl up in a corner of the room where people are.
If you have kids, or smaller dogs, cats, birds,etc....Danes are great. They are very patient and gentle with smaller creatures.

I think that they are the best!!

We just got a new puppy to go with our 4 year old German Shepherd.

He's only 9 weeks and so fucking cute that I can barely drag myself to work over playing with him A mix of a Golden Retriever and a Lab - we didn't want too big a dog since the other one's a lot of work due to its size.

Great Dane... hmmm.. far too big for me...

I do not need a guard dog. I live in fort nox, and my wiener dog oscar barks like a 100lb dog.

Beautiful dog though.

They run the house, I made that clear from the start with my wife that Oscar is the boss. He just lets us sit on the couch.

Probably told you before but we had a red doxie for 12 years. His name was Oscar (Baron Oscar Von Weinermeir). He thought he was a big dog tho.. went toe to toe with a neighbor's german shepard once (it wasn't pretty), but he never backed down from that dog.

Anywho... what are you trying for "The Ugly Daschund" disney movie? Why not a bull mastiff instead? hehe.. Really tho.. big dogs like that need a fair amount of attention. I've known 2 people with great danes. One, JoJo (a harlequin), was owned by a pet store owner. He rode in a VW beetle (old kind) that the guy took the passenger seat out of and built an 'add' on to the back seat. He like women over men (smart dog) and would lean up against you (hip level mind you) if you weren't paying attention to him.

Second one was named Nathan (his owner's last name was Hale). The couple were in the military. When the guy was stateside he'd run the dog 4 miles or more every other day, because they had such a small yard. When he was overseas, his wife 'walked' the dog around the neighborhood by driving around at about 20mph in their convertible MG Midget holding Nathan's leash out beside the car.

great danes rock!!! definitely get one and listen to sperbonzo's advice. also, you have to look out for their stomachs turning upside down. that and definitely invest in a good choke chain for when you take them for a walk. it happened to my old roommates brindle but that dog was so cool that i decided i wanted one for myself.

another friend of mine had two harlequins... goofy cool dogs but i perfer the brindlel coloring over the harlequin.

Harlequin:

Brendel:

if you're looking into big dogs, you may also want to consider a rhodesian ridgeback. thats another great tempered dog & bark less than the great danes.

Go to your local pound..get a great big mutt that will love you for life! I wanted to wait until I moved into a bigger place..but ended up getting adopted by a wonderful mutt!
He follows me around, never leaves my side, only barks when he " needs to " (or when we are out walking and he needs to talk to the other dogs in the neigborhood) poop training is up to you. I have some really good books on it that are very humane and effective.

Been doing some research online. Not sure if I want one now, was looking at all the "in memory of" pages, seems that many of them die very young, 3,4,5 years.

Unfortunately these are probably all racetrack rejects. They are raised and kept in kennels and Not housebroken. You are going to have a hell of a time teaching them at this stage of their lives.Having said that if you want to keep them outside, no reason they shouldnt be adopted.

Actually they aren't meant to be kept outside. I don't know of any adoption program that will knowingly adopt to someone planning on keeping them outside. I know of two couples near me who have adopted greyhounds. It's like training a baby. They are crate trained (don't potty in their crate), but they can't live in a crate all the time. They don't have enough body fat to stay outdoors in a pen 24/7. Once they learn about things in the house (like that they can't walk through a sliding glass door), they are very sedate, loving dogs. Be aware.. if you are going to let them out, they can jump a 6 foot fence. They are at over 40 mph in just a few strides.

Years ago I bought a great dane from a breeder as a wish fulfillment for a friend. The dane was over $1200 and at 8 weeks his paw size was that of a grown average doggie.

They are gentle giants and very intelligent, agile etc and great with kids.

But, great danes make for great poop piles on that morning you get up and slip in it :-))))

But good news is your house is so big, it would be a week before you found it and it would be hard and would come up nice with a jack hammer.
