It's Based on Celtic mythology of the middle ges. No black Celts as I recall. It was written int the 1940s and 50s, I believe, but Steve's point is also perinent.

Although I once read a feminist criticism of Moby Dick that made a very big issue out of the lack of female characters in the book, and the author was dead serious. Let's see; 19th century whaling ship, out to sea for months at a time.... how many women do you figure there were on such voyages?
