why cant Stevie Wonder read?

because hes black

I started my working life delivering food for a chinese restaurant when I was twelve. I have either made my living for the most part based on commision/tips money earned for services rendered--either sales commision or tips.

I beleive the comment that hospitality industry employees are uneducated is an ignorant statement. Thats like saying stockbrokers are thieves who only dispense advice that benefits thier own pockets. How many people doyou know that waited tables thru school.

I grew up in NYC where we tipping is standrd for everybody I do tip the deli clerk, the bag boy, the doorman anyone who goes out of the way to do thier job better its a way to reward good behaivor!

Black people deffinetly tip less so fuckin what I cannot fix it but thru discussion with my black friends some tip well more do not

I have asked and never got a straight answer and I have tried NFL players who tip like shit cant explain it.

Now here is a rub Black men tip in titty bars well so I think it's a cultural thing about value of service,, saying something like bringing my food isnt as much value to me as looking at some quality ass.

all imho

Tofu 12-16-2003 01:41 PM

Okay. Im a big tipper, but only if the service was good. I had a situation last Sunday where me and a young lady went to Dennys and were seated at 3.50pm, the waitress didnt even introduce herself or ask us what we wanted to drink until 4.20! We didnt get our food until 4.50pm. Everyone who was seated after us was already gone.....Now, you think I should tip some bullshit like that? Fuck no! In fact, we got the meal for free because I complained to the manager, and I STILL left $2 on the goddamn table. Plain and simple, give shitty service - you shouldnt even expect your %15.

True story-
A buddy of mine - who is very liberal- owns a successful restaurant. About 5 years ago, he started getting a lot of black customers. They didn't tip and so my friends waitresses all started to quit. Plus they were very loud and rude, so a lot of the
white customers - his regulars - stopped coming in. It almost put him out of business.
His solution was to raise the prices on all the items that the black
people were buying - primarily the chicken dishes - and it worked.
They stopped coming in and the good tipping white customers
started coming back.
This guy is the least racist person I have ever met and he hated to do this but it was a matter of survival.

see that's weird, when I was in Washington I asked for a "pop" and they didn't know what I was talking about...here in Canada we call it pop...I thought it was an american thing to call it soda...

and it's not cultural, but black ppl generally don't tip, it's a cheap thing, we used to increase the price of our booze on hip hop night just so that we were guaranteed a tip...but the one's who do usually tip well...

there are plenty of white ppl that don't tip...cheap fuckers!!!:321GFY

If I was a nig I'm I sure wouldn't mind paying to look at some white ass either.

i delivered pizza when i was 18, and we were open till 3am, big college town ... this one fuck, at the VERY end of our delivery area used to call and order small cheese at 2:59am, and it was like 4.99, he would hold out his hand for the penny.

another driver told the manager "im gonna shit on his pizza" ... the manager said "dont even joke like that - just deliver the fucking thing or dont come into work tomorrow"

45 min later we're cleaning up waiting for driver to get back, phone rings "yo man, some fool dun shit on my pizza!" ... managers face went ghost white ...

it was the driver calling, fucking with him ...

ok maybe you had to be there

Ironhorse 12-16-2003 02:03 PM

I even tip some taco shops for carry-out food. Once I find a good spot I usually keep returning so I do them a nice favor, they do me a nice favor and I get added service for a dollar.

TheJimmy 12-16-2003 02:07 PM

tipping is mostly a socio-economic thing...

not a race thing...

oi

PS: 50 racist tippers

stevecore 12-16-2003 02:09 PM

as a standard, i always tip 20%... unless i get shitty service. if the service is shitty i always tip a penny to them them know just how bad it was.

one time i went as far as spitting on the money.

davidd 12-16-2003 02:28 PM

How come no one has noticed the profound ramifications of this thread.

Ponder this:

Waiters and waitresses have been shown over and over again that the tips will be lower with some clients than from other clients.

On the flip side the clients feel they are getting shitty service. They chalk it up to a racism.

When it actuality all of the worlds problems would be solved if people just tipped better.

Profound.

playa 12-16-2003 02:32 PM

"The average tip from a black customer is about 13 percent of the bill. The average tip from a white customer is about 16.5 percent of the bill," says Dr. Michael Lynn, the study's author.

all this for 3.5%

I bet it cost the Tax payers over $1 million just to research this.

Wanna know the irony of it? The more people talk about it, then more the waiters will give less of a service to black customers cuz they know there not gonna get tip good anyways

eroswebmaster 12-16-2003 02:33 PM

My mother did some waitressing when my parents first got divorced I saw first hand how little money she made but how hard she worked.

This was during the time when they were allowed to pay less than min. wage because the government claimed that they would make it up in tips.

Anyhoo....she pounded into me the importance of tipping when it comes to good service. I always make sure to leave a nice tip.

If it's a place I want to frequent often then I make sure to leave an even nicer tip.

My dad on the other hand is a cheap mother fucker. When we go out to eat and he says something like..."don't worry I've got the tip." I always wait until he's not looking and throw down what should cover at least 15%.

davidd 12-16-2003 02:35 PM

Does this thread justify Denny's in anyway?

playa 12-16-2003 02:36 PM

lets see the numbers

typical $30 meal

on the average black person would tip $4.5
on the average white person would tip $4.95

all this for 45 cents? lol

Pizza Hut pizza kicks ass. Pizza is a staple of life. The only place better is Pizza King and that chain is local to certain parts of the country.

myjah 12-16-2003 03:02 PM

its not race - it's all in the person. i know plenty of well-to-do white people who just won't tip well.

In Indiana we call all soda and pop "coke." If you ask for a coke at my house, we'll ask you what kind, Mountain Dew, Sprite, Crush, Coke, etc. Everything is coke.

GonePhishing 12-16-2003 03:05 PM

I have found that it depends on where you work too. I worked at a nice place, and the black people that came in tipped as well as any other. I worked in a shitty place, and everyone that came in tipped like shit.

Actually, the averages are lower because there are more people leaving no tip at all. No tip at all is the real subject of the discussion. Being cheap and leaving a small tip is one thing. $1 for a $25 pizza order is better than nothing. But I'm talking about getting no tip at all, night after night, until it creates a stereotype and then colleges go out and do research on it.

Yes, because in reality, it's a socio-economic problem and not a racial problem.

When i pick up a pizza at Pizza Hut counter, i never tip eventhough they still have a space to add it in the reciept.

does this count

Rictor 12-16-2003 03:14 PM

It also depends on how you were raised. I grew up fairly poor with a frugal blue collar dad. He left a tip when we went to the steak house, but I realize now that he tipped about 5% or less. This was normal to me until I became an adult and realized that leaving a dollar for a party of 5 (two adults and 3 kids) is not acceptable. I actually trained my dad to be a better tipper after I learned. I'm sure his blue collar father didn't know any better either.

Education stops the problem.

OR...we could abolish the whole tipping thing and just pay higher prices at restaurants, since I don't really think the promise of a tip leads to better service these days anway. Just pay them $15 an hour and people will work hard to keep their job.

Nope. You picked it up...they didn't bring it to you. ;)

I have the feeling your question was rhetorical though.

Ic3m4nZ 12-16-2003 03:15 PM

Some of them don't tip because they don't have a good service... me too when I don't have good service I don't tip

You obviously have never been to Papa Gino's in New England (Mainly Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut).

That, my friend, is the defacto standard all other pizzas should be judged upon.

It's a nice theory, but I've been in countries (like Australia for example), where people do not tip and the waiters/resses make $15 / hour, and it doesn't hold up. Nothing against Australia, I really like it there, but the service isn't anywhere NEAR as quick, efficient and friendly as it is in the US.:2 cents:

But Australians are raised in the outback with crocodiles and shit...I saw it in a movie. That's why they don't have any manners.

I didn't find that much of a difference between the states and Australia in terms of service. But I will admit there probably is a difference - commensense says there should be.. I just didn't really notice it, It might depend on the type of resturant you go to etc though - I don't go to places where you get "refills" and it's not like I travelled extensively while there or anything.

bhutocracy 12-16-2003 05:31 PM

I'll tip here in oz even though you don't need to, but I don't like being FORCED to tip. I'll tip taxi's, a good meal at a good resturant, but not menial stuff and I loathe forced service - for instance toilet attendants.
