I believe I went to a whore house today

as I believe I got fucked. I have relocated to Oregon...and do not know any mechanics. The idler pulley on my car was making a hell of a noise so I selected a repair shop out of the yellow pages. The guy told me it would be about a $100 bucks to fix so I took the car in. The guy calls me back and says I need new brakes around...new rotors...new calipers...and a new drive axle...a little more than $1200 bucks. The car was working just fine...just had a noisy pulley. Mechanics are dangerous to ones bank account.

You may want to try 2 or 3 more shops to get a second opinion. Also, try bigger outfits like Pep Boys. The legal liability for fraud is so high in comparison to the benefit, that you'd get a straighter answer from those guys than from a one man shop.

You cant replace an idler pulley or do your own brakes?

Man brakes are the easiest thing to do on a car

Not with a severe back injury

One thing you can do is call your state's consumer protection hotline. There are state laws against consumer fraud.

I haven't checked...but I bought the car new in 1988 and it only has 70 plus thousand miles and the motor...transmission are still in top shape (at least for the time being)...and the car is still pretty much like new inside and out.

He did call me. I got the car out of the shop today and he gave me a "break"...the bill was "only" $1190 bucks.

Did you ask them why they were looking at your brakes?

No...but over the years I have learned that many shops will do routine checks to see if your car "needs" other repairs. The brakes were probably about due...though just based upon milage I estimated that they should have been at around 40-50% but I could have been off on my estimates. I do not know why I would have needed new calipers...and he claimed that the rotors could not be turned...but if I recall correctly I only had them turned once before...and though I am not a mechanic I think they can be turned more than once. Oh well...it is said and done.

Yes you went to a whorehouse and got it in the rear!! Rotors can be turned until they get to a certain thickness and they are supposed to be replaced. But they shouldn't be very expensive (unless you have a Dodge dually pickup then they're $400 f'ing dollars). New calipers? unless the seal was broken and leaking brake fluid there's no reason to replace them.
