I am sorry for ya lost.
My grandma passed away last summer so this will be the first x-mas for my family and her old man without her.

Sure will feel strange but these things always strike the hardest when it´s a holiday cumming up.

Just hang in there and try to tell the children as smooth as possible.

But they do need to know.

God had other plans for her soul. Don't interupt his plans. Be free and celebrate his life. Go fishing @ his favorite spot (more than once) light up one of his old cigars, watch his favorite TV shows, read his favorite book, gather with loved ones on holidays and talk about him and make jokes about his silly ways. This would be what he wanted you to do, so celebrate his life and remember all the good things he wanted you to do & have. That is all that I have for you. Hope that helped.

my Mom died in early November 24 years ago...
my Dad died the day before Thanksgiving 10 years ago. It was always a very sad month for the 5 kids they left behind.

The first few years of them both being gone were rough, but now we look back and enjoy the memories of them and make Thanksgiving into a celebration like no other .

my condolences.....

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I would suggest that since he passed so close to Christmas that you take this time of year to celebrate his life instead of mourning his passing.

Perhaps visit a place he liked to go, such as a park, prepare his fav foods, drink his fav drink.

Buy a tiny tabletop tree and call it Granpa's Rememberence Tree and have each of your children pick out one or two ornaments from the store that remind them of their grandpa to decorate the tree with. You can put the tree up every year and let the kids add a new ornament every year so that they keep his spirit in their hearts.

It depends on how old your kids are.. All of my grandparents had died by the time I was 11, so being younger, it was a little bit easier on me. If they died now, I don't know how I'd feel... Probably like complete shit.

Instead of mourning the loss and focusing on the loss itself, tell your family that they need to remember the good times, and that grandpa had a full and wonderfull life...

Sorry to hear that RRRED I just talked to my grandfather a couple days ago and he started crying on the phone because he is about ready to pass on as well. He is having strokes almost daily and he wants to go already.

It's a good place to be, things like this do happen and the only way to look at it is that as people grow old they pass on so the next generation (your children) can grow older and have kids of their own. One generation is replaced by the next.
