All family was born and raised in Canada back to 1700. The first dude came from France in 1760 or so and he was a musketeer of the King Louis XV.

So that makes me french canadian all the way :winkwink:

That is sooo funny cause my mom was totally like that. If we ever said a word in Sicilian she'd get all pissed off just like we were swearing or something, lol.

Visiting Italy I can see why she had this attitude. It seems like most of Italy severly looks done on Sicily for various reasons. Speaking Sicilian (outside of Sicily) is looked at just like people here speaking Ebonics.

It's funny cause my mom has a TON of Italian friends here and I'd say 90% of there children don't speak Italian. I always found that weird. It seems here in America most native Italian parents don't teach there children Italian.

In Montreal, it's very rare you'll find a second generation italian that doesn't speak the language (even if it's a dialect) and we've bascially have tuned our ears to understand all dialects (the harder ones being Barese & Albanese) but all the same - most speak the language & their kids do too. If you live in Italian areas, it is taught in the schools + there are courses offered on Saturdays so our kids keep a piece of their heritage. The good thing for my kids is that my maternal family all live in Venezuela - my son went for 1 month last year and he speaks Castellano fluently - he speaks Italian, French and English. That's an advantage if you ask me.
