A friend of mine used to live in of a Winnebago and towed an Aston Martin behind it. That was it, he didn't have a home at all. I had a 3-bed house in London. The thing is that we were always working in different places around the UK and Europe and actually lived out of hotels for eleven months a year. So when we had a break, I got on a plane to fly "home" while he looked at a map and went touring.

It never struck me that my conventional arrangement was particularly sensible in those circumstances, especially when it came to the ease with which he could play the residency loopholes to keep his tax bill down :)

My house in Phoenix was close to an apartment complex and I remember being stunned at the cars coming out of there. If you can afford a $60k BMW, you can afford a $200k house in Phoenix. The value of the car will drop no matter what where as the value of the house will rise.

And when I saw this thread I thought about this.

But after giving this some thought, I too was one of those. When I was 25 I bought a 1995 Ford Mustang GT. It was way out of my price range and I struggled to keep it. In fact, it lead me into bankruptcy. The condo I was living in - in Danville California - was for sale at the time. If I had bought the condo instead of the car I would have been sitting sweet.

Yeah I love punishing my car too. I would hate having to worry about small things like scratches in the paint on a high priced car.

BMW 318i are not that expensive.

what if someone likes the car for what it is, not just for status?... what if it's their hobby ? I got bmw not because i want everyone to look at me, it's a damn nice machine (go test drive one and see for yourself)... but I agree, house is more important ...:pimp

Life is short, you can either enjoy it or only try to make more and more money and then take the money into your grave. Enjoy your money, so you have things to remember when you are old. I just imagine 5 old men discussing how great it was when they bought a new house and rented it. Yeah, what a great adventure.

i live in bellevue washington... about 2 minutes from where bill gates lives (i'm not super wealthy). one thing i have always been struck by when i drive around super rich areas here is that maybe less than 5% of people with 2 million dollar plus homes own cars worth more than 50K. typically there is a mini van and a family car in the driveway/garage. you really only see a lot of benz's, ferraris, bentlys etc in cheaper neighborhoods (nice areas, but not the super rich areas).

I used to live in Bellevue, WA. They all keep those expensive cars in the garage and barely drive them. You see a lot of moms driving those mini vans and family cars, but the guys and single women drive those really expensive cars.
