AMD Duron vs Intel Celeron?

Looking at getting my dad an economy computer (He's still using a Pentium 133, so he doesn't need fast).

Which is preferable between these two?

AMD Duron 1800

or

Intel P4 Celeron 1.7 GHz?

The AMD system is about $40 cheaper then the Intel and has a larger HD, so I'm leaning towards the AMD unless anyone has something bad to say about them?

I usually use AMD when I build, but for what he needs...either one will blow him away. Go for the cheaper system with the bigger HD.

Personaly I'd go with the celeron if the AMD is just a duron. The celeron has more cache on chip from what I remember. Personaly I preffer AMD chips but Durons are shit. If you can find one, try to grab one with a 1.4ghz t-bird althon. They kick major fucking ass. Really good workhorses for the speed and very cheap

Not much difference anymore between Athlon prices and Celeron - so I'd go with an AMD Athlon! Just bought a barebox Athlon 2400+ about 6 weeks ago for next to nothing, had one 15 gig IBM hd serving as a paperweight, CD burner and DVD in my box (which I split: burner went into the new one), and took network card and floppy drive out of the retired box... READY: a new-ish computer for under $300! And once the hd gets full new ones will be cheaper (again), and a second or third hd is always good for lazy backups!

The Celeron came first it is a cheap chip designed for cheap
markets.

The Durion came next. It was designed based on more expensive
chips then had some of it's cache removed to make it cheap. It
has a faster bus speed then the Celeron and is newer better
technology.

The Celeron was designed to be cheap from the ground up.

The Duron was a faster, newer, better chip which was scaled
down to become cheap and compete with the Celeron.
