European Dedicated Servers

Hi

We're thinking of starting a data centre in Europe.

Is there a market for dedicated servers located in Europe? If you're having (or thinking of buying) servers in Europe, for what reason is that?

So what bandwidth prices are reasonable at the European market? I guess the bandwidth is priced higher in Europe than in the US...

Depends on volume, and the country you'll be in.

I think there are several reasons for wanting servers outside of the US (even outside of Europe). Everybody is so sue happy in the US is one (the reason I've been looking for a server outside the US). The other is for faster website access. It should take less time for a website to reach someone in Greece from Germany than from the US.

I'm setting up my new business in Nevis, not to hide money, but just because of the sue happy people in the US.

I would like to have my sites hosted in europe.
If there would be host with much better prices
than adult-host.nl, for example something like
100GB/Mo traf. dedicated for ~100? would be
good start I think.

Ok. What kind of server specs would be required?
Would a 2.4 Ghz Celeron 512 MB RAM 60 Gb HD with 300 Gb bandwidth do for ?150 monthly?

Check out xxxwebhost.nl

They build servers to your specs - So a one time payment gets your box -

Prices more than compare with USA - (I am saving around 1200$ a month - And have better, quicker boxes)

Bandwidth is expensive in the UK.

Our cocksmoker host for my mainstream company charged us about £1500 for 40gig overages!! Rack space also costs a fortune.

Just because one host charged you that much doesn't mean all UK hosts cost that much.

The two most important legal situations to avoid in the US would be:

1) Obscenity

2) COPA

Obscenity is fairly easy to avoid as long as you don't put out some crazy extreme shit, and COPA is stumbling along in it's quest to become an enforceable law, but you never know if one day it might happen.

On a related topic, one should do a lot of research before going with any NON-U.S. host (or if they are already are with one)...

I've found that many NON-U.S. hosts are actually running on servers located in the United States! Texas, California, and Florida lead the top locations for outsourcing by foreign hosting firms from what I've found when doing a small sampling awhile back.

And even if one is lucky enough to find a truly 100% foreign host that doesn't cost a fortune, that still doesn't fully protect one from U.S. law...well, unless one is physically located outside the U.S. and even then that's not 100% if they are (including corporate officers) still a U.S. residents and/or citizens...

For various tax reasons and civil liability reasons, many U.S. adult companies locate/host outside the U.S...but make no mistake, if the company/officers are comitting criminal offenses *and* the U.S. authorities have them in their sights, the long arm of the U.S. law will likely get them no matter where in the world they happen to be hosting, etc.

David,

Get some pricing on L3, UUNET, and Cable and Wireless. They are going to have the best peering from Europe to the US.

I would pick up a mbp from you w/ a server if it all looked right.

We'd pick up some space if it was reliable.

www.westmaster.com is one of the few I know who runs US-competitive pricing with EU-based boxes. But I think they have an office in FL, so US law might still be applicable if they got served.

Just a general comment cos I don't have all the info here right now.

Hosting in Europe can be just as competitive as the US rates. Eg... the Docklands data centre in London is "the" main pipe across the Atlantic and into the heart of Europe. A few friends have set up servers in Docklands and it was revealing when they quoted the prices - damned good!!

And yes, there is every reason to avoid US hosting, not for any "quality" or "support" reasons, - just simply because of the US government and related laws, which are clearly a problem and I have little doubt we ain't seen the start of it yet!
