University of Washington plans to fight Acacia patents

?We?ve looked into the patent and passed it on to the Attorney General?s office,? said Jim DeRoest, the assistant director of C&C. ?If we were approached by Acacia, the UW attorneys would defend us in court.?

http://thedaily.washington.edu/all.l...-Token.Count=7

Big trouble for Acacia.

This is exactly the type of story that deserves a major press release from the IMPA.

Something like this could get other colleges interested in helping fight and also outrage the public at the same time.

The IMPA should get moving on a press release to all of the major wires & news organizations.

The momentum needs to be turned against Acacia.

Attacking schools was a stupid move and they should pay for it in public opinion.

So adult, and now a Uni and soon a cable company (most likely) are in the fight. Hmmmm. Can anyone blow Taps? On a *real* bugle? We should record that for the condolances card that should be sent.

I would imagine that if the U of Wash was indeed fighting Acacia, they will do what the Adult community has done and form an partnership with other Universities and colleges.

As this affects pretty much all of them (and I do mean all of them), they could resource together, like the 13 adult companies that are fighting Acacia in court and fight Acacia in court as well.

Now you are talking some serious financing when you start talking about Universities and Colleges across the country. The millions that it could cost to fight would be chicken scratch to 20 (or more) Universities across the country. I do believe that most Universities have online classes and that saves them a shitload in staffing costs. They could easily justify the financing for this fight.

Acacia is, in my opinion, screwed big time if this is true.

The thing is, this is something that WOULD interest the general public, because it would suddenly start affecting college tuitions. Considering most major post-secondary courses involve media, etc all use the streaming technology, that would mean that a majority of the educational institutions would be taking a huge hit. 1-2% might not seem like much, but it's cumulative...

Yep, this is gonna make things EXTREMELY interesting, not that it's getting some press.

The internet as we know it today started at Stanford.

Threatening Stanford was probably the stupidest thing they could have done. All they need to do is start talking to their own professors, ex-professors and ex-students to know the entire history of prior art that was created... not to mention the fact that they obviously have everything documented quite well.

this i have always said is where acacia made their big mistake. they tried to invade russia in the middle of winter. seriously. suing universities where the professors and students have NOTHING BETTER TO WORK ON than a ridiculous case like this presented against thier school to which they are fantatically loyal to? it's the beginning of the end for acacia. period.

Exactly. What the hell were they thinking? These schools have armies of geeks, armies of lawyers, and mountains of well documented prior art. Acacia is done.

This article is based on a what-if scenario. Acacia has yet to contact them, and now probably won't.

i'm not sure why universities would have been contacted.

in UW's case - they aren't deriving revenue from the video - and it would behoove acacia to grant them a fee-free license - so as to not have to take on Washington state's Attorney General as well as, more than likely Preston, Gates and Ellis.

oh well.. i probably would have done a few things different from acacia. they ain't morons though. rest assured - if they are going after colleges/universities, they got a method to their madness.
