The highest court in Massachusetts ruled on Tuesday that same-sex couples had the right to marry under the state?s constitution.

The ruling is the first time a United States court has granted the term ?marriage? to same-sex couples, The New York Times reported. In 2000 the state of Vermont allowed same-sex couples the right to civil unions, but avoided the term ?marriage?.

The Supreme Court of Massachusetts ruled that lawmakers had six months to amend the state?s marriage laws, allowing same-sex couples to be granted wedding certificates.

One of the named plaintiffs in the case, Hillary Goodridge, said the decision was ?a profound moment for our family?. In a press release issued by New England?s Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), Goodridge said, ?We will no longer have to try to explain to our eight-year-old daughter why we can?t marry, or that we love each other even though we are not married. And more importantly, we?ll be able to provide Annie with the full protections under marriage that we now can?t possibly provide.?

I know several committed gay couples who are much more stable than the majority of hetro couples. If two people love each other and want to commit to each other by being married, more power to them. People have the same rights, whether straight, bi or gay.. why wouldn't it extend to marriage?

I believe in the civil union - giving gay couples the same rights afforded to married couples under the LAW.

However, the term MARRIAGE is used for religious purposes. I don't think it is the right of the government to tell the church who it can and cannot marry.

I honestly don't give two shits about the terminology, but I know many religious people that do care, and as unfair as it is to gay people to deny them the rights of marriage, it is equally unfair to deny people the "purity" of their religious beliefs.

The civil union meets them both halfway.

It will be very interesting to see what the divorce rate figures are in comparison between str8 marriages vs. gay in a few years.

Yet for now I cant believe that some continue to believe that being gay automatically means you do drugs, have aids or spread it etc. etc.

Looking over the posts I can pretty much tell tell the ages of some. 50 years ago this argument was over whether blacks and whites should even date!! much less get married. Nothing much has changed I can see.

Is it possible for two men (*or women) to have a loving relationship?? YES.

Is it their right to let others know that they are committed to each other and in love?? YES

Is marriage based simply on sex and the bringing up of family?? NO - if that was the case then childless couples would be banned as well as those who cant have sex due to some physical ailment.

I am really tired of hearing that adam and steve routine - you assume that everyone believes in god. Some are meant to bear children, some are not - its a matter of taste and what you were put in this earth for.

What's the problem with calling it a "civil union"? It gives the same rights under the law as "marriage". Marriage is meant to be between men and women, if gays want to be permanent legal couples, I have no problem with that, but call it civil unions, not marriage. I lived in West Hollywood in LA for years, even had several roommates who were gay during that time, I have no problems with gay people at all, but the term marriage should be reserved for the wedding of a woman and a man...

What about adoption?

Right now, if you are single, you cannot adopt, as they (the courts and child welfare authorities), have determined that it takes both genders to do the best thing for the child as far as the childs upbringing is concerned. They have said that it takes a mother and a father.

In a gay union, there is obviously a missing mother, or a missing father.....so.....any thoughts on gay couples adopting? I know that some want to and it would make them happy, but is it in the best interests of the child? If it is wrong for single people, thenwhy would it be right for a gay couple?

It DOES happen all the time.... it happened to my parents also, but nobody PLANS it that way. There is a HUGE amount of evidence, BTW, that children of divorced and single parent households tend to have a lot more problems and difficulties with life and relationships in general.

So if we are minding our own business, then why don't we just let people marry 10 year old kids, or let parents beat their children as much as they want to? These are extremes, but I'm just making the point that stepping in on behalf of children is not always wrong.

I agree with u...I know a lesbian couple and one of them is pregnant...children need love and understanding....the issue is not how society will treat them but first, how will the parents educate their child??? with gay values or unbiased and diversified?? In this case the women plan on raising their child as they were raised..to be monogamous and educate their child on being both straight and gay ..

Right now, if you are single, you cannot adopt, as they (the courts and child welfare authorities), have determined that it takes both genders to do the best thing for the child as far as the childs upbringing is concerned. They have said that it takes a mother and a father. In a gay union, there is obviously a missing mother, or a missing father.....so.....any thoughts on gay couples adopting? I know that some want to and it would make them happy, but is it in the best interests of the child? If it is wrong for single people, thenwhy would it be right for a gay couple? just want to see what people think
