Adobe Premiere Pro - anyone knows?

Hey guys,

I've spent 6 hours today of my time trying to figure this out, and I am about to get on the phone with Adobe and tell them to shove their motherfucking $700 product up their asses.

My Problem:
When I start a new project, I get two choices for editing Mode: Video for Windows, and DV Playback.

Dv Playback doesn't let me choose my own widthxheight size, so I wanna do Video for Windows.

Problem is, I get no sound when I choose this option. I get the Audio track and everything, but I cannot get a sound out of it no matter what I do.

I am just totally desperate for help at this moment. Anyone who can help me would be my hero.

Thanks!

Edit in DV move then compress later to the size you want. You should do this anyways to save compressing the file twice and loosing quality

I'd love to, but I am not working with tapes. I got WMVs already that I need to process, and those WMVs aren't 720xwhatever size DV is. Thus, it resizes my original and totally fucking up the quality of it. That's why I need the Windows Video . Please, if you know the answer, post it here.

Thank you all so much.

Gotsys,

fisrt of all i havent tried it but i have never seen any wmv that are 720x480 dvd size....im thinkin cause its not possible but i could be wrong.
if you have wmv files and want to convert them then open up premier and import that file Ctrl+I and then manipulate it in your timeline and export to your format of choice

BTW Premier is a bitch!

The sound thing, check when you export your file to see what audio codecs you are saving with.
this happened to me many times and I finally realised i was using mpg2 audio codec i rhink and since most pc's dont have the codecs installed it wont work.
Also i would recommend doing mpg files, i know wmv will save bw and stuff but its q really Lame file format imho..

good luck

doober,
thank you very much for your help. Unfortunately, that is not my problem.

The problem is, that in order for me to imoprt my wmv file, I first need to create a project. WHen I create the project, I have 2 choices: DV Playback, and Video for Windows.

DV PLayback has sound, but fucks up my original viewing size of the WMVs. When I do Video for Windows, all is good, but I get no sound - not on the export, but generally, I don't get a sound in my timeline editor - ie. I get the sound wave, but the wave is NULL - or empty, so it doesn't play.

whoa..that sucks bro..
You realize that premier is resource hog that doesnt alwasy work well...
Some operating systems seem to make that software incapable of actually functioning correctly.
This is what i would do if I were you, unistall reinstall and see if the same thing keeps happening.
Usually when you open premier theres a window that asks you what kind of project specs you want and you choose and go to the next window. the only time you get the other 2 choices is when you have a dv ca plugged to your pc.
If you have nother PC install it on that one and see if the same thing keeps happening.

I know one of my pc's premier refused to work correctly and was very very buggy with it. My other pc's thankfully didnt have these problems and was able to use it.
Regardless i only use this program to make trailers and what not.
IMHO its garbage for anyting more than that.
There are so many good non CPU intensive programs out there to do video well that using premier is almost pointless, considering that it also tends to crash after long periods of usage and causes you to loose all your shit it really inst worth its huge pricetag.

sorry i couldnt be more help

alot of people here use Vegas Video from (Sonic Foundry?)
Back in the day there was a good app for sonic foundry that did asf and Rm clips real easy i forget what its called.
Cleaner is what Quiet and Aaronm and few others stand by.
To rip dvd's I use smart ripper/dvd2avi/vfrapi/Virtual dub/tmpgenc. For other jobs like cutting and making thumbs and doing galls I use myflix. I have tried way too many video products and banged my head against the wall many times realising that im somtimes happy just using the simpler and faster free products that actually kickass imho.
I have never had to do WMV but i have messed with windows free encoding utility and have seen some very decent results.

My preferece is by HQ mpg tho so i dont have much need for any other formats.

If I had to make quickime and real and wmv formatys i beleive cleaner is the way to go. I have a copy but have not had much time to test it just yet.

hey doober,

I tried many many packages, and the only one that can import WMV files in, so I can work with them, is Adobe Premiere. Unless Cleaner can convert my WMVs to something that Vegas can work with , without loosing the quality. Then I would need to use Cleaner again to convert it back...sounds like lots of time

damn it, why does this have to be so damn hard

OK! This is the way to do!

Import WMV files in TMPEnc end convert them in MPG (HQ mpg let say some 2500 kbps) and than you can work with them what you like.

I am using VirtualDUB for all conversions (free product but most powerfull at this time). I have used Premiere but stoped.

WMV rules in quality, bandwith and use of use in Windows systems.
