God, some people just push all my buttons and piss me off to no end. I'm white and in the household I grew up in expressing any sort of racist view was near enough the worst crime you could commit. Thank god for parents like that.
I know that I had great grandparents that weren't so open minded but we were taught about their views and told they were WRONG. At eight I found out that when my great grand mother (not blood thankfully, dad was adopted) died they found a Klan hood in her closet. It tainted any memories I had of her and I demanded - at 8 - that it was destroyed. The point is that all it takes is one generation to stop the racist views from being passed down. In my own life I have unwritten rules for picking friends. If I ever hear someone who I am becoming close to make even a slightly racist comment I can't be their friend, just can't. |

So....this is what happened. We got up and drove down to Gun Barrel City, TX (yes, that's the actual name of the town) to have a talk with the old bastid! We called Theresa into the house and sat her down while her brothers and sisters played outside. He basically apologized to her and told her that it was a bad word and he shouldn't have used it. He went on with some other blah blah blah! When he was through talking to her, she gave him a kiss and told him, "I love you Paw Paw!" and ran outside to play. How's that for some forgiveness, huh? Well, I wasn't so forgiving. I basically told his old ass that if he ever called one of my kids a ****** again or called my wife a ****** lover, I'd drop kick his old ass and do some things to him that I can't post here on this board!!!

"And her father stood up and he started to shout So I threw a right-cross and knocked his old ass out" Seriously, good luck with the talk. Hopefully civility and reconciliation will be the order of the day. |
I wouldn't worry too much about grandpa or your daughter if I were you. My own kids are mixed race. Back in the day I used to worry that someday they would run into some rednecks or something.
But over time (they are almost grown now) I have come to realize that things have changed. They are all extremely popular and well developed kids. Because of the MTV generation anybody who is mixed race today has elevated social status, at least in the white suburban high schools. I think racisim if a thing that will die off with this generation finally. And I stopped worrying about my kids a long time ago. I think if anybody called them a racially insensitive word they would just laugh, and maybe not even get the concept. At this point since racism in America it least is largely confined to the lowest classes just always make a lot of money and you won't have to come face to face with people like that. :thumbsup |
