Better than Google?

I'm currently working on a project that uses massive manual research labor to create a context sensitive search engine. I would like to know what kind of QUESTIONS you normally have in mind when you run a Google search? ie., do you have a mental checklist that you instantaneously run through when looking at search results to help you decide which link to click.

Microsoft recently decided not to buy GOOGLE because it concluded that search technology is still in its infancy. I agree. The best search engine should be context sensitive and must be dead on in helping the searcher find EXACTLY what he/she is looking for. Apparently, MSFT's inhouse bots helped them reach their conclusion about the state of search technology. Obviously, this is a very complicated task. However, with the right amounts of filtering and hand research, I believe this is possible.

Any search engine anecdotes, feedback, or comments would be greatly appreciated.

"where are some free pussy pics" is generally the question of the day...but that hasn't worked on a SE since five years ago so there are always the newsgroups

I look at the title and at the .html / .php page to see if that page has the really specific thing im looking for.

Never read the descriptions.

Scripts can't tell context.

Everyone and their mom has a SE and a TGP.

You need something absolutely blockbuster to make it something people actually USE to search with.

I've been working on the idea of a better search engine for a solid year now...

There is only so much that smart scripts can do, the ultimate search engine will be a system like dmoz.

The content is filtered manually and links get shuffled on a weekly if not daily basis.

This of course if done with the same amount of data that google has, it would take a long time... In my opinion, google isn't really a "search engine", it's an automatically ranked keyword listing.

It's flawed. Search should be based on quality of content, not only popularity.

1. the ultimate search engine will be obviously using genetic alghoritms and using neural networks. there is no way any human force can handle all the work. google is definitely closer to this than dmoz is.

2. the term quality is very individual and subjective.

Regarding genetic algorithms... anyone know if Gilead Genetics' algorithms are patented? Of course the use it for pharma compound generation but the methodology seems appropos for Behavior Tracking (aka online searching)
