Hosting Question
Does anyone know how I can find out who the host is of a particular website? For example, if I wanted to know who hosted sex.com, how would I do it?

The first step would be to do a traceroute "tracert" from dos or a "traceroute" from a shell.
Here's an example traceroute to sex.com # IP address Host name Round trip time 6 209.247.9.149 so-5-3-0.bbr1.LosAngeles1.level3.net15 ms 7 209.247.9.114 unknown.Level3.net 47 ms 8 209.244.3.138 so-6-0-0.edge1.SanJose1.level3.net 15 ms 9 216.218.214.221 gige-g3-0.gsr12012.sjc2.he.net 47 ms 10 216.218.214.217 gige-g5-0.gsr12008.fmt.he.net 15 ms 11 64.62.249.122 pos5-0.gsr12012.pao.he.net 32 ms 12 216.218.254.33 gige-g5-0.gsr12008.pao.he.net 31 ms 13 209.81.1.2 fe-1-1-0.pao.via.net 32 ms 14 209.81.1.49 pos6-0.mtv.via.net 31 ms Appears he's buying his bw from via.net and their upstream backbone is he.net. Sometimes it's not always the easiest to figure out who they are hosting with and sometimes they are buying direct from the backbone. You need to learn a mental list of the backbones and you'll understand what's going on a little better. Hope that answers your question. |

You can also do a whois on his IP at arin.net.
http://arin.net/whois/index.html Once again, may or may not be the hosting provider. By ARIN's rules, the person who is actually using the IP address (forget which / minimum) should have them registered to them. |
