![]() Ok this is a sad thread I know but anyone else here dealing with Diabetes? It's not been made official yet but I know I have it because it runs in my family and usually hits at age 30-40 and I am now 36 years and have the symptoms and been sick alot.
Swollen feet, no good circulation, dizziness, hot all the time, skin itches and is dry, feeling sick to stomach. I guess the halloween candy really sent me over the edge, been feeling like shit for the past couple days. Anyone else dealing with this, got ideas to control it such as diets, meds, etc? Any help would be appreciated. |

My great aunt just died of Diabetes, she had been in and out of hospitals for 3 years, the funeral was last week. She had her leg amputated and was going for dialysis (spelling?) 3 times a week. She's not in pain anymore thank goodness. She had just celebrated her 80th birthday. Gosh I miss her so much.
All I can say is watch your salt intake and get on a nutritional program and take your insulin. I better stop before I start crying.

BrentD,
A close friend of mine has Diabetes. Definetly requires a major lifestyle change, diet, pennicilin, etc. Not to downplay it but it's nothing that a bad ass like yourself can't overcome. ![]() SixNine |

Hey - I was told 4 years ago that I had diabetes and I am now 42. There are several different types out there - your doc will more than likely put you on two different pills to start with before the needle is used.
Keep a record of your daily sugar levels and things should be okay - always excersize and those foot problems will look after themself. I have the same thing as you and when I go overboard - it gets sore. If you smoke - stop - bad circulation - (*Im one to talk i still do smoke) Feel free to talk to me if you want, and look into drug plans that are out there for medication - it will become costly.

My father was just diagnosed with Type 2 last week. I honestly don't know much about the desease which actually makes it kind of rough. It's hard to watch your old man admit he's going through something like this and to think of the possible outcomes. But I have seen the man defeat virtually everything put in his path ever since I can remember. I'm sure this will go down the same way. It has to.

My little brother was diagnosed about 18 months ago. He's 16, and of course thinks he's too cool to follow the diet and treatment plan. Go to a doctor and a dietitian. They'll put you on the right medicines and make sure you're eating right.
The biggest thing is following the doctors orders. I suppose an extra soda every now and then isn't going to be the end of the world, but you really do need to manage your diet properly.

It runs in my family, too. That's why I love the Atkins diet. Alot of people with pre-diabetes have gone on it and reversed their blood sugar levels.
![]() I had gestational diabetes twice when I was pregnant. The doctor told me that I would have a MUCH greater chance of getting diabetes later in life, so Atkins is the lifestyle I will follow for the rest of my life. I now drink diet soda (which I've totally gotten used to) and I eat sugar free candy and ice cream (they've got some KILLER sugar free stuff out now that even my sugar craving husband loves, like sugar free Reece's, mmm). Cut back on the sugar and it will help alot. If you start now, you may be able to get it in control now and you may never get it at all. Good luck with it. ![]() |

![]() Yep, I got an appointment tomorrow at 2:30PM for blood tests and such. I really don't eat alot of sugar, when I get up I have 2 cups of coffee with 2 teaspoons of sugar and a ton of creamer. I eat one meal a day which is always dinner because of my sleep schedule and then after dinner until 8am or so when I go to bed I will eat a few snacks like 5 cheese hot pockets, or a bowl of capt crunch with 2% milk, or a sandwhich of some type usually bologna or ham/cheese. Dinner is usually a nice course meal, something like chicken in wine sauce with green beans or something like that, usually a meat, a veggie and some mashed potatoes or something.
I know my eating habits suck, I don't get out and exercise although I do have a gut but I am not fat anywhere else I am 6'1" and 240lbs which is not far off from what my weight should be actually. I really do need to start walking and using this damn Crossbow Machine (like bowflex) I spent some cash on sitting behind me. I jsut find working out to be boring and if I work out I am not working online to make money so I usually phase out alot of things I should do to replace them with time spent on making a few more dollars to pay the bills, hehehe, trust me I am not like most webmasters on here, I don't make myself rich doing this industry, I have yet to find any sponsors that work well for me except for broadcasting concepts which does usually a couple hundred a month for me. Anyway, enough babbling and I appreciate everyones post here and will post an update tomorrow after my blood tests, hopefully it's not too serious, I deal with ARD (acid reflux) now the way it is with a prilosec otc once a day, had this for 7 years now and I can't take penicillin becuase I am allergic to it (for whoever it was that recommended penicillin). |

Diabetes is something to take seriously however you can do a lot just by watching what you eat and exercising. Like someone said earlier, The Atkins diet is the the best thing for diabetics. In some cases you can control it by what you eat and in some cases you can not. There is a lot of information on the internet that can help you out.
One thing I can tell you from what you have posted is that you need to eat more regularly. Even if your blood sugar levels are a bit high it is better for them to be stable than to skyrocket when you eat and then drop when you don't. It is very hard on your organs to do this. Good Luck ![]()

Who says dairy is good for diabetics? Milk is a sugar.. lactOSE.. anything ending in OSE is a sugar. Fructose, sucrose, lactose, etc.
Just having a half a cup of milk spikes my sugar more than anything else.

Tara & Bret,
Realize the dairy industry is big business.... almost as big business as diabetes & heart disease. My old roomates niece had diabetes for years... she was on the shots & all that. She cut out all dairy completely (including whey in bread, etc) & after a few months doctors were scratching their heads... no more diabetes. As far as the study you posted goes, check the sources find out who paid for the research... but more importantly, read around on the usenet or web about people with diabetes who cut out dairy completely. Good luck to you guys either way ![]() |

My 6 year old little boy is Type 1 Diabetic. 4 insulin shots daily. Its quite a work out each day to get him to eat right. Especially considering the fact all he likes is carbs, which turn into sugar.
Changing your diet has got to be the hardest thing to do, so feel I for you. Hope all works out ![]()

Fat doesn't seem to be the problem. All sugars and carbs are though.
![]() I've been diabetic for several years, a few without diagnosis where we had no idea what was wrong with me. I've been on several medications for about a year or so and they helped a lot. But the more I read about diet and nutrition, the more I resented being put on the meds instead of being told what was really going on in my body. The ADA puts out a magazine for diabetics with recipies that have 50+carbs per serving! They dont' know what damage they're doing. I've been doing a reduced carb diet for about a month now. I wanted to do a very low carb one, like Atkins, but I've got too much going on this quarter to cut them out entirely. I'm down to about 60 grams a day and I've already cut out 2 pills a day and several pounds. I'm having a tough time eating bacon and eggs and steak when I've been told for years to avoid meat and eat tons of pasta and rice and bread to lose weight. Now I'm trying to get almost all my carbs from veggies and fruits if I can (like I said.. some stress = some bad munchies!). I plan to start a new diet in January where I try to get my carb consumption under 25 grams a day to start and see what happens. I hope to get off all my meds by summer.

i stopped using sugar for this very reason. Coca cola and one coffe with sugar once a week are the exceptions. I was extremely addicted to sugar and I couldn't stop this shit from my coffee.
