Yes... ICQ - back in a few.

tony286 11-04-2003 01:35 PM

I just went back to the gym today for the first time in a long time lol. Maybe we can a icq where we check in with each to give each other motivation to exercise every day.

Anthony_A 11-04-2003 01:44 PM

A suggestion:

Get a page up for webmasters.

Have a before and after pic.

Before pic starts today or whenever the webmaster decides to change their lifestyle.

The after pic is 90 days from the start.

Body for life did really well with this and got copied like crazy.

At 5'10" you are considered overweight if you weigh more than 170 lbs. So you are about 25 over.

However I don't think you really start looking fat until you get into the 200 + range or it all goes to the belly.

Another great idea... anyone can do this want me to hire them to do it?

Ic3m4nZ 11-04-2003 03:25 PM

The secret is nice sites like http://www.bodybuilding.com and http://www.elitefitness.com

"If you are an overweight adult webmaster who wants help loosing weight" you might help but if they don't have no motivation they will get nothing.

If like 90% of the webmasters are overweight not a lot of them will have the motivation to go at the gym or do more sports.

Half of the people who starts at the gym give up before 3 months (that is normal people who likes sports)

And Overweight webmasters (who are never doing sports) will be much much worst like 9 out of 10 webmasters won't have the motivation and will give up before they hit 3 months at the gym.

Actually I have the best domain for that heavy2healthy.com :)

Glad to see someone taking the initiative to do this! If no one steps up to the plate, I'll take some time out of my weekend to start up that website.

Just brainstorming off the top of my head:

- as stated in this thread, before & after pics
- a discussion forum
- weekly scheduled live chat
- helpful links to related websites

I guess a new thread should be started for brainstorming ideas and stuff.

Here's a good place to find people who are willing to help and encourage you to get back into shape (if that's what you want to do):

It focuses on bodybuilding but there is a lot of great stuff on fat loss too.

Sounds like a great plan. A few comments:

(1) You don't need to do that many crunches and you shouldn't do them every day. You'll overtrain your abs. The key to getting a six pack (if that's what you're after) is not to do sit-ups and crunches until you puke. All you need to do is reduce your body fat (which you can do by lowering your intake of calories and raising your metabolism through cardio). Everyone has a six pack. It's just that most people have too much body fat for it to show. Crunches will define and bring out your abs but like any other muscle group, they need rest in order to recover and grow. I wouldn't work them more than twice per week.

(2) Don't lift weights every day. Three times a week is more than enough. Also, don't work the same body parts in every workout. You will overtrain your muscles. Muscles grow when they are recovering from a workout. If you stress them every day, you won't give them a chance to do that. Rest is CRUCIAL. Don't work a particular muscle group more than two times per week. Lifting weights is GREAT for losing fat. Muscle burns fat. The more muscle you have, the more fat you'll burn.

(3) Pushups are useless. Do bench presses instead.

(4) You need SOME fat in your diet. Believe it or not, all fat is NOT bad. Eat lots of protein and watch the carbs (especially the simple carbs).

Peter Romero 11-08-2003 07:02 PM

Good advice... but... I have to disagree a little.

Crunch slow and many & yee shall prosper... breaking up into 2 workouts a day & 25-50 rep sets. The key here is proper rotation of muscle groups... and yes... REST!!! Lower back exercises are essential here too.

I had a re-occuring shoulder problem until I stopped doing bench press & started on the push-ups. 8 sets or 25 reps for now & increasing as time goes on. Don't worry, I use perfect form - which is key to making push-ups effective and not destructive. The thing about push-ups is that you can do them anywhere and at anytime, which suits me fine because I work & drive alot. Dips are good to do with them @ rest areas on the side of the freeway.

I do 3 diferent weight workouts 2X a week per muscle group:
1. Chest, Shoulder, triceps
2. Back, Biceps, forearms
3. Legs
rest 1 day
repeat
I only go heavy one time per week and super heavy 2X per month
with that formula - I give each muscle group 4 days rest between workouts... even when I train almost every day. Similar exercises on cardio for the muscle group that I worked on weights that day: chest - swimming, back - running, legs - cycling

My diet is strict right now to drop weight quickly but will level off when I increase exercise in a week. Just getting in the habit for the first 2 weeks, then I'll get serious after that.

Anyone else inspired by this thread? ICQ me.

RE: crunches. People usually work their abs in one of two ways: (1) high reps/daily or (2) low reps/a few times per week. Most people don't want their abs to GROW. They want to define them and your workout will do that. Every day is still too much though. You should always have off days (that goes for cardio too). Five times per week is the most you should do, IMHO.

RE: pushups. Sorry to hear about the injury. Those nagging injuries can be a pain in the ass. If your goal is to add muscle, you need to gradually increase weight over time (stronger muscles usually = bigger muscles). With pushups you are limited to your bodyweight. Your reps will increase over time but that doesn't build muscle. You can tone muscle that way.

I don't do abs every day... I do them for 3 days & don't work out at all for a day... and work out for 3 days... and don't work out at all for a day... etc.

I quit lifting weights for a year. I just did push-ups & dips & Cardio. I was up to 600 - 800 push ups a day 2 - 3 times aweek and when I got back to benchpressing again I was pain free till I slept on it wrong and had to go back to push-ups for a month. I maxed out @ 385 in August on flat bench and 275 on incline bench so I'm ready to hit it hard this winter.

Hope you get the time soon to make that site... no-one will believe me when I loose the weight that I was ever big.

I'm not into working out but I do need to lose some pounds so I am going to go on a diet and do some walking.

I'm at 215 lbs and would like to get down to 185 or so.

Tala 11-09-2003 01:29 AM

Tofu, thank you. You have no idea how much I appreciate that.

I'm trying really hard not to let everyone hear about my crap when they have their own to deal with. It's good to have someone to talk to, but even then I tend to bottle up.

I started Atkins three days ago and have lost 6 pounds so far, but today i blew it all to hell. I'll start over again tomorrow.

x3guide 11-09-2003 01:40 AM

lost 35 pounds or so since june.. I'm having pasta, rice and bread nearly every damn day however.. the only things I've changed from before is no alcohol, no fast food.. going for a fast walk or jog every day, twice a day sometimes.. 5-6miles at least every time.. need to drop another 20-30 pounds or so but so far it went easier than i thought.. the leg pains from the first months are gone.. figure i'll start with some weights stuff later on

I'm going to start doing Atkins also. I did it before and it worked great. I lost 20 lbs or so in about two months. Then I went off it for and slowly regained all the weight over 12 months.

Peter Romero 11-09-2003 02:02 AM

I hope this thread lasts until I get down to 210 and boob guy makes that site.

makefuckingmoney 11-09-2003 02:21 AM

Ive lost a ton of weight in last 3 months..

I basically did an atkins type diet, and cut a ton of fat from my diet..

Then I bought some weights, dumbells and a situp bench and they surround my computer..this way.. i can do it whenever I like..

I dont worry about overtraining cause I would rather overtrain then worry about resting...ive rested long enough..

My diet is easy..I just eat el pollo loco 2 piece meals every day..And I eat a bunch of salmon.. I havent eaten meat really in a few months.. I also take multi vitamins...

My BP went from like 150/100 to 115/70..

Only thing I lack is cardio..it just BORES me!!

Very true. I was never fat, just out of shape and undefined, but during a 6 month break with my gf, I was sick and didn't eat or sleep much for the first month... Lost tons of fat, so I took advantage of that and started eating properly, taking lots of protein, and running/lifting weights regularily.

Now we're back together and I have a great body, everyone wins :D
