you think that's the only reason?

i believe there is more to it than that. maybe i'm wrong - but the reason i think this place got so huge, was luck. there was around 10 posters who kept this board going the first 18 months. if it was just idiots, you can look at a 100+ boards that do that just. and are not huge.

Sure, I agree with luck for the most part. I have been here since the beginning. People like Boneprone and that crew that really got shit flying on here would not have been tolerated at other boards. At the time what were the other big boards? The fact that you could get away with talking jibberish and slinging your own shit like a chimp made this place popular real quick. That combined with the association to the ever popular AP per click program and the incentice/reward program brought people out of the woodwork.

GFY built itself like a cancer. You had to be a real jackass to get banned and that lent itself to epic pissing matches and strong strong board personality development.

Lens had nothing to do with it other than hosting it and dangling the hope of getting a tshirt or a dvd player in front of newbs faces. Like you said, luck.

yep, luck. ynot, then netpond, then gfy i guess. neither were anything like gfy of course.

i read the boards for years, before i ever posted. the first time was gfy.

again, maybe i'm wrong, but i think lens understands exactly what's going on here. this board is more popular than ever, regardless whether or not any of us like it anymore.

i agree - huge bunch of idiots and spammers these days. yet the place is more popular than ever. time will tell i guess, as always.

but you may be right, maybe lens doesn't see what's going on here. some how i doubt it though.

Oh, I think he understands how to keep people posting. Newbs eat up post count, tshirts, dvd players, hiring geek chum like Cheshire and Loryn, that is sheer brilliance.

But does he understand the day to day politics of GFY? The undercurrents that built this board? Who hates who, who likes who, the stories blah blah blah. Does he understand the soap opera that is GFY?

Not at all. The fact that he bans long time posters and allows the spammers to over run his board only proves my point. Lens only cares about impressions, how they are created is irrelevant.

i'm in compete agreement with you here.

this is obvious, and has been happening for long enough that it should make all of us realize just how little any single poster is actually worth any more. basically nothing.

but let me ask you a question: do you think gfy will decline in the next 2 years? i don't think so, regardless if fletch, myself, amp, etc are all banned.

hell, maybe it will decline. but i don't think so. at least not in the next 2 years.

and of course, the entire idea was to make money - as long as it does, nothing will change.

Nah, I think its still growing. More newbs jump on every day. How many of the old guard still post?

So long as there are newbs that are obsessed with post count and the promise of a dvd player and seeing some boobies, GFY will exist.

There is nobody on this board that will say it is better now than it was 2 years ago. It is quantity over quality now.

I don't think that goal is unique to GFY - I think it's what motivates every board out there whether it's GFY or a newbie board somewhere.

oh, you removed your post... oh well.

Nothing wrong with that. The dynamics of virtual communities are getting a lot of attention.

This place is a gathering place of neurotics, paranoids, recluse, multiple personality disorders, scammers, pedos, spammers, and any brand of deviant you can imagine.

A gathering place of people who work in smut, people want to work in smut, people who do not work in smut. Where else can you have someone like Amp telling someone like Shaw or MikeAI that they know nothing of how to run a business?

Having a background in social science, this place is a fucking gold mine.

i can put it back. there was no reason for that post, other then to incite more responses.

and yet those who've done it all, mantrize (is that a word) what they might have done, over and over.

It is a shame...you are one of the few with an intellect. Do you still intend to do your thesis on the subject you previously stated? If so...are you already working on it? I would like to read it when it is completed.

Yeah, same topic. My advisor is a maniac and loves the subject. I am not working on it right now, I am in the middle of a bunch of courses on delinquency/deviance, popular culture, and the justice system. Which coincidentally is going to fulfill requirements for a BS in Criminal Justice. So at the same time I am gathering up theory that I will have to incorporate into the thesis, I get a free degree. Bonus. That and I was introduced to the work of a Marxist philosopher that has really changed the way I am going to approach the subject. I need to spend the next few months trying to wrap my brain around this guy.

So yes and no.

But today that secret has been deciphered. While the mechanism is to all appearances planned by those who serve up the data of experience, that is, by the culture industry, it is in fact forced upon the latter by the power of society, which remains irrational, however we may try to rationalise it; and this inescapable force is processed by commercial agencies so that they give an artificial impression of being in command.
do you really buy this?

Partially. I am completely unfamiliar with the Kant reference, but the power and purpose of the culture industry I will not dispute.

You two are the philosophers, I am the sociologist, be gentle.

Someone should register "intelligentdiscussions.com" and put a message board on there. Individuals who wish to participate have to complete an IQ test.

Evidently being on the intelligent or interesting side like Labret, Joe Sixpack or Cherry works well.

Rejects can post forever and ever. Just ask to see some boobs, announce when you get laid for the first time, and post total garbage over and over and you can stay forever.
