My computer is haunted!

My main system's power supply died a week ago..so I put together another one from spare parts.

Here's the thing..I turn it off at night (And yes..it IS off)..and when I get up in the morning..it's up and running!

Now, unless Windows 2000 pro has some special command in it that I don't know about, I don't know how it's doing this. If I forget to UNPLUG it, it's always on bright and early the next day.

Tell you..sometimes it's kinda freaky to walk into my study and find it sitting there running. Afraid to turn on the monitor cuz it might say something like "Good Morning! Where have you been?"

Anyone ever gone through anything similar?

It happens to my son's computer when he doesn't turn it off properly and has put it on hibernate or sleep mode.......It scares the shit outta him when he turns around and the movement causes it to 'wake up' - and he's suddenly has a bright blue light staring at him.....

The first time it happened, I thought I had just left it in sleep mode, but it is most definitely OFF.

Hmmm....maybe my cat is more resourceful than I give him credit for!

Maybe you have some kind of auto-wake-on-LAN feature enabled on your network card, and the local skript kiddy hax0rs are fucking with you.

I honestly DID do just that before I posted the first message. The closest thing I could find was someone who had the problem with Win98 and someone suggested their bios could be messed up and causing it.

Nope..no feature that I know of...being using the same cards for..oh 2 years now..and the 2nd one doesn't even come on. It's just the main computer that does it.

Dang..it's looking more and more like it IS haunted!

I was thinking that too! Disable wake-on-lan!

It could be on the BIOS...That's where mine is!

Is there something scheduled in task scheduler, set to "wake computer" to perform it? Because I know that's an option in windows task scheduler or whatever it's called.

::he shuts his computer off?? mine only go off when the electricty goes out and even then I've considered battery or generator back up ::

That's what I thought - this thing never goes off for more than 30 seconds - if it does I just about have to hand-crank it to get it to start again.

We're moving three states in a couple of weeks and I think I'm going to have to borrow a set of electric paddles from the local ER to coax it back into life when we reach the new place.

Its nothing to do with any of the settings, if its completely turned off its not going to turn back on by itself due to a bios setting etc. Id be willing to be its a problem with a faulty powersupply or mobo. I had this exact same problem with one of my machines in the past and turns out it was an electrical problem and had to do with the PSU, id turn it off and it would turn right back on 20 secs later. Id try swapping power supplies with someone and see if that does the trick, if not have someone that knows about computers take a look at it and your mobo wiring. When he turns it off tell him to turn it off by the power supply in the back (if theres a switch), or tell him to hold the power supply down for 10 seconds after the pc goes off and that might help. ;)

Hey there! I think you're on to something. I checked the bios before I went to bed last night, and there was nothing there for a "wakeup" call. (And of course forgot to unplug it so it was up and running again for me this morning.

I DID look in the task manager, and there was a notation for the virus scanner to do chores every wednesday between certain hours. I got rid of it..but this happens every day, not every wednesday..so I guess I'll find out if this works. But thanks for the tip!

Good input from ya'll! And this is a real possibility also because I've noticed the last couple of nights that when I hit "Shutoff", the system DOES NOT turn off. So I have to hit the power button for the system to shut down. And yes, I've done other things for over an hour before I left the room for the night, and it didn't come back on..so I'm positive the power was off.

Sometimes my bedroom light comes on all by itself, but I think my neighbor probably has the same sort of remote-controlled lighting that I do, and he's turning on my light

I hate when neighbors do things like that including changing the cable channel you're watching!
