Question : When buying a dedicated

I am considering buying a capped 20mbit for my galleries..

The thing is ... my current server peaks at 25mbit in some periodes of the day, but are mostly pressed around 15mbit

Would a capped 20mbit work or whar will happen ?

during peak periods, you will lose a lot of traffic...

get uncapped or get a bigger cap.

The server will lag at the peaks since it will attempt to push 25 megabits but will only push 20. The bigger the difference between your peaks and cap the more lag you will experience. Hit me up on icq at 36837470 if you have any other questions.

But does lag mean "will not work" or just "galleries will load 20% slower than normal" ?

Your server will still be allowed to push 20Mb/s of traffic, but no more. So it will "lag," or be slower, and some connections might time out if the difference between your cap and your usual peak is very great.

The machine will still be working, but it will be slow. But you don't have to worry aobut any overage charges at the end of the month.

No, you had it right the first time. If its capped at 20 and you ask for 25, things just happen 20% slower.

If thats acceptable, go for it. It all depends on your content, line speeds, latency, etc. There are too many variables to give a "right" answer.

I would not think you are in danger of loosing any connections, if the surfer is just getting a 1/3 second of a delay loading a page, or something like that.

For comparision one of my business T1's for a non-adult web site is overloaded at about 200% of capacity. Most of the time it still feels reasonably snappy.

Hello Biskoppen,

If you would like, give me a call and I can conference in one of our engineers to go over the performance you can expect from that capped line with the amount of bandwidth you are currently pushing.

Another thing you should consider is the cost of the additional 5mbps vs the potential loss of revenue. Who knows you might be better off just to keep the 25 mbps line.

Good luck.
