![]() I spent most of last night trying to get Win98SE to boot up in a new p4.
I took the c drive from an old p4 and installed the drive as the c drive in the new computer. But I CONSTANTLY get "Windows Protection Error"..."change the # of stacks in config.sys". I've changed config.sys so many times my head is spinning. I put in stacks=9,256 and stacks=64,128, but STILL get the very same error message. I can't find any other info from Microsoft or se's that tells me anything valuable. It boots up into dos ok, and everything is indeed there on the c drive. Anyone have any ideas why I'm getting "Windows Protection Error" on this. What should a config.sys file look like? Any help on this greatly appreciated! |

Yup, unless you've got some funky hardware or software on there, it probably should be blank.
It's always best to just back up your data and do a clean install. |

Is there an easy command to give in config.sys or autoexec.bat that would make the system recognize the existence of the cd-rom drive? Thanks! |

Do you have an existing computer with WIN98SE on it and a floppy drive?
Just go to the control panel and use the option for making a boot disk in there. I've never had a problem getting the CD-ROM to work if I make a bootdisk from there. Start>Settings>Control Panel>add and Remove Programs choose Startup Disk tab at the top. |

try adding this line to your SYSTEM.INI file in the [386Enh] section:
; Increases default stack pages from 2 to 8 MinSPs=8 or try this stack setting STACKS=12,256

there must be a switch to use with the universal cd-rom.sys that makes it d drive or e drive. Anyone know what it would be? |

Boot up and go into Setup (CMOS) and make sure the settings are right in there first. I can't remember which submenu line those settings are under but they are easy to find. Left hand column under one of those lines is all I remember right now. lol
Make sure the cd is set to slave and in the secondary HD plugin on the Mother board also unless you only have one HD... but double check the HD and cd to see they are jumpered right if you onlly have one of each. If you have two HD's then the cd has GOT to be in that secondary plug on most systems. You can't just plop HDs in a system from another usually... the mothers have different checksums etc and they rarely match from chip to chip. Best way is to boot from a floppy boot disk tho. If you have to, put the two systems side by side and stretch the power cables from the good PS to the motherboard in the old system to get it up, you can also stretch the HD cables to the HDs the same way. Kind of a tight fit but we used to do it all the time so it CAN be done. ;-)

looking the wrong way. You have to change the jumper setting on your harddrive from master to slave. Make sure the harddisk is the master and the cdrom is the slave. Put the harddisk at the end of the cable.

Why boot to win98 just to run a few programs?
Other options try partician commander or os selector install every operating system but keep XP as your main boot for that set up. This is your best option in my opinion.
