Windows & Linux!

What's the best way to code in mandrake or windows? What's the best way to use apache and mysql linux or windows? I use my ftp sometimes and i have it on my windows it's good. I just installed mandrake, i don't seem to like it, I think windows is more compitable and way better programs for programming. What do you guys think i should do? I mostly do php/mysql and c++. Some graphic design.

I personally use Win98SE, I'm a windowz bitch.

Yes Lindows Sucks my left nut,
For Programming I don't think it would particularly matter, if you want stability go for *nix, if you want to be programming and have your pc crash every 2 mins go with M$.

I have an older PC that I just run redhat on. I set up samba and mapped a drive to the linux box on my XP machine. Now when I script, I can just save a file normally and can then check it out in my browser. No FTP necessary. That may be overkill but I'm a geek and that's what I do...

When I write Perl, I use Optiperl which only runs under windows. It doesn't run for shit under wine. People who use Notepad or something similar are just impractical...maybe a tad sadistic. There are some great development tools out there, use them!

Windows has its place, even the geekiest of geeks have to admit that.

For php/mysql development linux is the better choice. Unless you're develpoing for Windows servers.

But if you dont want to switch your desktop environment you can always set up a cheap pentium box to run linux / apache / php / mysql combo and code from your Windows machine. You can than set up your folders in linux as a shared drive on Windows using samba so you dont even have to mess with ftp.

Best of both worlds.

I spend about 80% of my day writing HTML/PHP/MySQL/PostgreSQL code and I use Dreamweaver MX on Windows. Just like A&H I use a Samba map to store it on my Linux (Slackware) server. Seems like a solid combination.

My reasoning as as following. Nearly 100% of users are on Windows platform so it makes sense to preview using Windows browsers since even Mozilla for Linux doesn't display sites exactly like Windows version due to small differences in fonts and other minor rendering issues. Further, there's no IE for Linux...

I use Gentoo too, it might be a little hard to set up for a newbie, but once its up its easier to maintain than Windows. Best Linux out there by a mile.
