Windows & Linux!
What's the best way to code in mandrake or windows? What's the best way to use apache and mysql linux or windows? I use my ftp sometimes and i have it on my windows it's good. I just installed mandrake, i don't seem to like it, I think windows is more compitable and way better programs for programming. What do you guys think i should do? I mostly do php/mysql and c++. Some graphic design.

I heard Lindows sucks, Do you use Linux? What do you think is better for programming, windows or linux? |
|
I personally use Win98SE, I'm a windowz bitch.
Yes Lindows Sucks my left nut, For Programming I don't think it would particularly matter, if you want stability go for *nix, if you want to be programming and have your pc crash every 2 mins go with M$. :2 cents: |
HAAHAH, Jdog where you been man? We gotta do our shit together. :) , Don't know man i just installed Mandrake and i think it sucks. I think i am going back to windows for programming, I believe Windows has way better shit for programming.

use kdevel in freebsd
|
I have an older PC that I just run redhat on. I set up samba and mapped a drive to the linux box on my XP machine. Now when I script, I can just save a file normally and can then check it out in my browser. No FTP necessary. That may be overkill but I'm a geek and that's what I do...:thumbsup
|
LMFAO, Naw man i can't do shit on linux i can't even install vb.net or photoshop to do my programming work to do my sites. I built a new pc and made my old pc into a linux box and i think linux sucks, windows doesn't crash when i program, i use XP. Linux you gotta fucking do a lot of shit to just install one program, it's a bitch.

Jdog, Which linux do you have installed? Do you like linux? I am about to format back to xp, Dreamweaver is better and notepad.
|
As a web server goes FreeBSD is the best way to go.
|
freebsd, what should i use it for? Do you think xp is better for programming then linux? For apache and stuff and for php.
|
When I write Perl, I use Optiperl which only runs under windows. It doesn't run for shit under wine. People who use Notepad or something similar are just impractical...maybe a tad sadistic. There are some great development tools out there, use them!
Windows has its place, even the geekiest of geeks have to admit that. |
Ahmed, What do you use mostly linux or windows? Add me on icq at 237842929 so we can talk more.
|
For php/mysql development linux is the better choice. Unless you're develpoing for Windows servers.
But if you dont want to switch your desktop environment you can always set up a cheap pentium box to run linux / apache / php / mysql combo and code from your Windows machine. You can than set up your folders in linux as a shared drive on Windows using samba so you dont even have to mess with ftp. Best of both worlds. |

not if you use Debian or Lindows.. apt-get works like a charm, and synaptic is pretty groovey too.... :thumbsup :thumbsup |
Are you serious or just trolling?
|
i think its totally up to your own personal preference. i do most of my programming on remote servers using vim which i swear by. its just that thats what i am most comfortable with. when i do php programming on my windows machine i use zend studio cause i'm a zend zealot.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH
i almost pissed my self reading this thread Use GenToo it is a new version of linux ... best thing to happen sence sliced bread :) |
I spend about 80% of my day writing HTML/PHP/MySQL/PostgreSQL code and I use Dreamweaver MX on Windows. Just like A&H I use a Samba map to store it on my Linux (Slackware) server. Seems like a solid combination.
My reasoning as as following. Nearly 100% of users are on Windows platform so it makes sense to preview using Windows browsers since even Mozilla for Linux doesn't display sites exactly like Windows version due to small differences in fonts and other minor rendering issues. Further, there's no IE for Linux... |
I use Gentoo too, it might be a little hard to set up for a newbie, but once its up its easier to maintain than Windows. Best Linux out there by a mile. :thumbsup
