How important is domain name to the success of a site?

is the domain name really critical to the success of the site?

all my domain names suck.

theyre all a 3 or 4 word combination of sex, movies, porn, videos, xxx, etc. Nothing that's super easy to remember.

I mean if you have an asian site and called it "Asiangirlpornmoviesxxx.com" would that be fine, or is that a bad idea because it's hard to remeember?

If you're depending on an affiliate program for traffic I think it has nothing to do with the domain name. It might be good for type-ins but I think the marketing has more to do with the success of the site than the domain name alone.

not really. Just me promoting it though avs, tgps and search engines. Maybe if it does well then I'd open up an affiliate program for it but I'd be promting it myself for at least a year.

It really depends on the domain's development plan and mission.

Is the domain really dependent on this though? If you had different domains, would this hurt your sales?

Agreed

Domain names are worthless on their own, otherwise, why would companies be selling them at 10 bucks a pop?

You need to have a strong marketing and develoment plan in order to grow any business so far as domains go, ghdgshsgshjsooi.com could be a money maker with the right marketing behind it

Marcus, it's all about the branding and the grand development/architecture of the network. I say again... network.... because you're going nowhere with ONE site.

Emphasis on the branding and development, as well as the marketing framework.

This is where people like me come in. You can't do shit like this on your own man. I'm sure someone will post an example to prove me wrong, but those rare few are lucky success stories, and rarely duplicated. You need a full team of professionals these days, all extremely competent in their fields, to pull this shit together. Coders, designers, PR, marketing, techs, think tank, etc.....

the days of the one man show are all but fucking gone bro.

Marcus the domain doesn't mean much unless you want it to mean something.

Be more creative with your words. You should be able to create decent 3 word domains still. It just takes work.

I thought your domain name was part of the SEs calculation of your position for a search term. I don't know *how much* but I'm pretty sure from my own searches that a domain named asian-fuck.com will come up way ahead of an identical site on a different domain.

Anyone have any info on this????

You'll never build a brand with a domain like www.sex-porn-nude-hardcore.com

Domain name is everything.

When I first went looking for porn, I thought to myself, "Type in thehun.net" because thehun.net is what sprung to mind when I thought of porn.

no.... you won't. You're absolutely right. But.... you're looking at the small picture. You need to think bigger.

well yeah, I have this day dream where down the road I'll have a portfolio of 5 or 6 profitable sites and have affiliates making money promoting them. But this will just be a first step.
Eventually I'd like to have a large team like you're talking about but for the beginning I just need to start somewhere.

I've made a lot of sales this year promoting other sites and I think I could do it better if I had more control over what I'm selling.

But I'm obsessing over domain names. I buy like 2 new ones a day, I have over 100 now and I'm not crazy about any of them.

I think of domains names that I remember from years ago, thehun, asian.org, allpetite and I can remember them all.

in the beginning stages yes.... domains play a more important role. But you don't need to register everything you trip across.... it takes alot of research, but you can still find some really good domains if you are willing to burn a few weeks working on finding them.

That's called branding. It can be done with any domain. Need I mention Bang Bus?

I think that is a quick summation

It depends on what your definition of "success" is. If you're looking to brand a site then the name is important. With branding you get rentention and repeat customers. If your just looking to generate traffic then pretty much any old domain will work, depending on your marketing approach.

The less syllables the better, I never buy a domain with more than 4 syllables and 2 words.

When picking a domain another good idea is try to get a domain with repeating First letters.

i.e.

fuck fest
amateur asians
anal ass

my

This is true, however some domains have extreme branding potential, while others just have branding potential.

something different (not generic), bashed into the heads of millions of surfers, everyday, for years on end... tends to have quite an effect.
