Judge: Student may wear Bush 'terrorist' T-shirt

DETROIT, Michigan (AP) -- A high school student has the right to wear a T-shirt to school with the face of President Bush and the words "International Terrorist" on the front, a federal judge ruled.

"There is no evidence that the T-shirt created any disturbance or disruption," U.S. District Judge Patrick J. Duggan said in the ruling released Wednesday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, which sued the Dearborn school district on behalf of Bretton Barber.

For those that weren't here yet, it was the ACLU that brought suit against the Justice Department invalidating The Communications Decency Act in 1996.

i'm not looking to have sex with boys, nor am I offended by public displays of religion, nor am I a fag looking to get all up in someones face to let them know about it, nor will my underage daughter be secretly wanting to have abortions behind my back... and so on, and so on.

Isn't it kinda sad that a judge has to rule on that? How many tax dollars did that consume?

if you were a father, would you rather your underage daughter had a child? seems like an abortion done safely at a doctor's office might be a better idea so she can move on with her life after making an error in judgement - not to mention the expense of raising your daughter's child, since most 16 year olds aren't exactly self supporting

I agree with the ACLU in this case, but you do have to admit that it's funny how the ACLU picks and chooses the cases that it fights. They have never defended kids in school that were banned from carrying a bible in school, or banned from having a shirt on that mentions god or jesus. They have defended art exhibits that show people pissing on the cross, but won't defend exhibits that are shut down because an indian shaman religion was offended by the use of menstral blood in the painting. The list goes on and on and on.....

Unfortunately when you look at their record, the ACLU has a very clearly slanted political agenda in what issues they choose to defend. (By the way, I'm not Christian). Their choice of cases has been blatently politically correct, left wing, anti-christian, anti-white, etc.... I like a lot of the things that they do, but shouldn't they be defending the constitutional rights of people that have views that they don't like also?

I think that it was Thomas Paine (could be wrong), that said: "I may hate what you have to say, but I will die to defend your right to say it!"

Definitely truth to your statement.

I think they may count on the Christian Coalitions to finance those cases though.

I have no problem with this as long as I can wear my anti-French shirts to school.

The ACLU may do good from time to time. That doesn't change their not-so-hidden agenda. They probably spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on this case in the name of "Freedom of Speech". Where will they be when I say something they don't like?

i think its a distraction and draws too much attention. If a kid wanted to wear a shirt that says "i hate ******s" , he wouldnt be allowed to.

I got flack once in high school because I was wearing a Godsmack t-shirt that had pentagrams on it. The person complaining about it was extremely liberal, he always drove me nuts, he said the pentagrams were disturbing and frightening him and that I should change shirts.

This is a high school not commie u

If the shirt had bad mouthed a left winger and not Bush
the judge would have ruled the other way, it's happened many times in the past.

interesting...I think that affirms that no matter what the organization, they will pick and choose their battles carefully.

Seems natural that the ACLU is going to defend free speech that falls within its acceptable range of tolerance. That probably helps them to solidify their base of funding.

After all free speech, as with the recent case of Limbaugh shows, is down to the pocket book behind it.

So does the absence of the defense of those cases you mentioned have to do with the ACLU's power base and funding, or current administration?
