Clark Urges Abc To Fire Limbaugh Over Black Qb Remark

Posted on Wed, Oct. 01, 2003

Democratic candidate Clark urges ABC to fire Limbaugh over McNabb remark

RON FOURNIER
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark on Wednesday urged ABC to fire conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh for saying the media wanted Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb to succeed because he is black.

Clark, a retired Army general who entered the race Sept. 17, called the remarks "hateful and ignorant speech."

Before McNabb led the Eagles to a 23-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, Limbaugh said on ESPN's pre-game show that he didn't think McNabb was as good as perceived from the start.

"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well," Limbaugh said. "There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

ABC is the parent company of ESPN.

McNabb said Wednesday he wasn't looking for an apology, because it's too late for that. But the star quarterback said he was shocked to hear such comments on television.

In a letter to ABC president Alex Wallau, Clark said, "There can be no excuse for such statement. Mr. Limbaugh has the right to say whatever he wants, but ABC and ESPN have no obligation to sponsor such hateful and ignorant speech. Mr. Limbaugh should be fired immediately."

Ahaha. ABC can do whatever they want, but that is hilarious . All the bitching about freedom of speech when the Dixie Chicks had something to say, now a presidential candidate is pushing for this...

I see nothing hateful about what he said. Unpopular opinion? Sure. Hate? Riiight...

Rush is right... let's fire him over it!

McNabb is the 24th rated passser in the NFC... hardly worth all the attention.

But he did win all those Super Bowls. Oh wait a second....

Its not really a racist remark, its a racial remark, but it doesnt really attack Mcnaab for being black, or anyone else in general. Basically stated is that Mcnaab got too much credit when his team deserves more praise, had he removed the "black" portion of his comment there would be no call for any kind of reprimand.

Oh but I do think Rush is a dumbass for other reasons

That's probably because Rush is a dumb ass. I've listened to him once, that was enough.

LIMBAUGH: 'WE SUPPOSEDLY HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN THIS COUNTRY'
Wed Oct 01 2003 14:05:44 ET

The nation's top radio star Rush Limbaugh finds himself at the center of a media storm over comments made on ESPN last weekend.

CNN all but turned its network over to the controversy on Wednesday, suspiciously putting the story ahead of the CIA leak swirl started by CNN's Bob Novak. The commotion began when Limbaugh said on ESPN's pregame show that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback do well.

"I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well," said Limbaugh. "There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

Quarterback McNabb told cameras he isn't looking for an apology -- because it's too late.

"We supposedly have freedom of speech in this country," Limbaugh explained on his radio program. "An opinion is an opinion."

The week prior, Limbaugh defended and spoke up for the league?s black coaches in a commentary.

What a bunch of horse shit. Leave it up to the bleeding liberals in the media to scream 'racist' for no reason whatsoever. Are people ignorant enough to believe people don't think like he suggested? He didn't say anything negative about the athelete, just that he thought his performance was over-rated.

Naw, Limbaugh fucked up. It is a racist statement but NOT all targeted at McNabb but at the media.

A QB is sorta if not always the captain and guidance of his team next to the coaches. Defense is always the best offense I figure but if that's the case no QB deserves credit.

Limbaugh's a race baiting windbag who puts his foot in his mouth every other day. We expect this foolishness from him.

He caters to the fearful and uninformed populace who buy into his propoganda for the right wing. He makes broad sweeping statements that are nowhere near truth and blames others instead of taking responsibility himself.

Same could be said of many of us BUT this man is the bullwork of radio broadcasting because so many of the U.S. are so damned bigotted and ignorant. He should be ashamed of himself for bringing broadcasting down to a new low under the color of concern for our land.

bullshit....rush is a racist idiot....McNab has been to THREE PRO BOWLS...If Rush said that he's overrated, that would be cool...but he SPECIFICALLY said that the black quarterback is being pumped up for society's sake...

And I'll bet you thought that the Rodney King beating was justified and the cops slamming the kid on the car on VIDEO was justified....You're the perfect person to sit on a Jury that is blind to the fucking obvious....

Clark seems to change his mind on issues like most people change underware.

I think Rush is right about his comments, but in this society we have been condtioned so much to feel guilty about being white and to feel sorry for blacks, that the slightest negative thing about a black makes someone a racist.

Last year the Eagles were kicking ass with their third string guy Feeley. So Rush is right, the defense was carrying that team.

So you agree that McNabb is over rated by the media, because the "media" wishes to see a successful black QB?

Limbaugh is just a spokesperson for some seditious group or groups who's intent is spreading discord under the color of traditional values and morals.

He makes incredibly outlandish claims, fabricated focuses and his worst is his rants about 'The Liberal Media'.

Notice how he can ignore the fact that from day one the media has and is OWNED by conservatives for the most part.

Alternate views considered 'liberal' weren't widely reported until the late 60s due to the persistence of the revolutionary movements made by caucasians in the media at the time.

I know, I've worked in mainstream media for over 20+ years and have yet to meet a bigshot media mogul who was a REAL liberal. They're liberal alright when they're looking for dope or brown women or new acts, but you turn around once and they're just as conservative as they feign to dispouse.

Yet you bring that up to Limbaugh and his response is 'Hollywood's full of liberals!' and then he'll note Spielberg, Dreamworks and a few others. Omitting the thousands of other owners over the past 100 years who didn't even have blacks, asians, women in strong roles til forced to by courts and market advisors.

He's a puppet. That's all and sooner or later his concience will get the best of him.

I totally agree. I made that argument several months ago when the Dixie Chicks were banned from many radio stations for expressing their discontent with President Bush.

He very well may be a racist. I don't know, nor do I care. But, a quick question for you... in an article above it was mentioned that Rush had recently praised and gave great credit to various black coaches. How does a man praise a black person one week and discredit another black man the next week and still be deemed as racist?

They should hire me, if they want someone to make real racist remarks. Rush's comments were far from racist.

Are there any Jews in the NFL? I know in MBL there are a few, Shawn Green with the Dodgers, the Kosher Kid.

Easy.....just like a fool would say "I have a lot of black friends" to prove he isn't racist....

And I don't see where he praised "black" coaches specifically....I'm sure if he was praising coaches, they weren't all black....PLUS he didn't say that they were good "black" coaches...He probably just said that they were good coaches...

defended black coaches? Who the hell said the BLACK coaches were incompetent!?? Probably an ULTRA racist caller on his show... So Rush is less racist than some people.. does that make him not racist? Does that give im a liscense to say whatever he wants about black people?

Limbaugh is not a total idiot... he wouldnt be as popular he if was...

He from time to time have "moderate opinions" which will give him some sort of credibility... he hopes

I didn't hear the "praise" so I have no idea, just going off of what was mentioned above. You could very well be right.

All in all, I do think he's racist and a complete moron. Oh, and I have a lot of black friends. Haha...

I wonder what ESPN is going to do...given they are a Disney company and all...

I don't know if Rush should be fired; however, I don't think people are wrong about forcing the issue to Disney about the content of a sports show.

There is going to be some serious heat on that show now, especially since ESPN specifically told other presenters on the show _not_ to comment about the issue.

So, ESPN is going to defend the rights of Limbaugh speech on the air...yet restrict their other presenters from commenting or giving interviewers....

Interesting shit.

[McNabb] said Wednesday that Limbaugh's comments about his race were out of bounds and added that someone on the show should have taken him on. Among the other panelists are former players Michael Irvin and Tom Jackson, both of whom are black.

"I'm not pointing at anyone but someone should have said it," McNabb said of the panelists, who also include Chris Berman and Steve Young. "I wouldn't have cared if it was the cameraman."

According to USA Today, ESPN chose not to have Jackson, Irvin, and Young comment.

DISNEY???? Disney is one of the most long term racist institutions in the media! Disney didn't have a black person in an animated feature til 2001!!! The ONLY other time was a live action actor in 'Song Of The South'.

Don't EVEN get me started on Disney and their bullshit. Asians, blacks, native americans, jews, all forgotten by Disney's animation division until the pressure was put on. Then you have 'Aladdin' with some brown people in it.

Disney has a lot to answer for for two major sex/pedo incidents. One was their former infoseek guru who got busted and off light sentence for soliciting sex and planning to have sex across state lines with a minor. Then they hired a director already convicted of sexually abusing a minor ON VIDEO.

Disney then fires all it's animators and keeps only the Australian animation division open where I doubt very highly any brown, black people work there.

So for ESPN to be under the Disney umbrella and some shit like this happen is typical for them.

Michael Eisner the Disney honcho happens to be jewish but to what degree is unknown. For some reason people hate that man no end and I wonder what he'll have to say about this new debacle.

It's all about ratings and sponsors. If ratings go uip to see Rush and sponsors don't pull their ads Rush will stay. If the dollars walk then so will Rush.

Like Bill Romanoski spitting in J.J. Stokes face on live t.v.? Or offering another player drugs because white guys needed any advantage they could get?

There is a big difference between players, coaches and commintators.

Players get fined and continue play regardless of how moronic their behavior is.

That seems to be the NFL's policy. But we are talking about ESPN/Disney's policy not the NFL.

About 20 years ago popular sports columnist and odds maker Jimmy 'The Greek' Snyder made an offhand remark on why blacks excell at sports. He focused on physical gains made during slavery and the press and public crucified him.

Jimmy meant no animosity but he was given no quarter whatsoever. He was fired by CBS got into all kinds of shit and it was uncalled for.

Rush on the other hand is an asshole. If there were other blacks on that news-sports panel and didn't take him on they oughtta be fired too.

Working in major corporate atmospheres I would see constantly how hiring of blacks was based on 'how easy they are' meaning would they fall into place and not make waves. I would see one black person murdelize another one far worse than any white guy could or would and they would turn on one another like wolves.

I remember offices that it was quite common to have a token black person around who just was basically there to throw off the feds. These people would always be called to walk out to the front of the office if a suspecte federali or other black person came into the office.

Same with other races too. It's pitiful. But that's business for you.

So let me get this straight, Clark wants to have a journalist fired becuase he didnt like the comment. Democrats have celebrated speech more hateful then what Limbaugh said. i.e Al Sharpton. I dont like Limbaugh but he still has his 1st ammendment right.

Yeah, except Disney/ESPN won't let any of their other presenters comment on Rush's statement and it's relevance or validity...

Why is it perfectly ok for a black people to CONSTANTLY refer to themselves as, and point out the fact, that they are black (see: ever black person I've ever met or seen on tv), But if a white person mentions that someone is black, it's racism? Same applies to every minority..

Ever see a TV show where the white cast continually refers to themselves as "A proud white man"?

Discussed this with my hispanic, and black friends many times, non have ever had an answer other than "i can say it because i'm black"..

Cute, true story

In high school, there was this girl.
She used "Because I'm Black" as her answer for just about everything.
Like, the teacher would ask her to read aloud, and she'd respond with "why you asking me for, you think i can't read because i'm black?" this went on for a whole year, til one day she was late for class, and the teacher asked out loud, in front of the class why whe was late, I interrupted and yelled out.. "because she's black"... everyone including the black chick, and laughed..

The teacher sent me to the office, where I was promptly suspended for 3 days.

Go Fuck Yourself

I don't know Rush Limbaugh and I don't listen to him regularly, either. All I know is that I heard the statement that was aired and it was him calling the media racist and not a racist remark about the athelete.

Your last comments I'll just choose to ignore because they don't dignify a response. I could care less if you agree with me about interpreting what Rush said but give me a fucking break about the rest of your bullshit.

McNabb overated,, LOL

my only thing is that his comments are so off its crazy.
why the hell would the media want black quarterbacks to do well?
It clearly shows his attitude towards race.

Media wants to show black quarterbacks just as much as they want to show missing/murdered black kids
